hints for alignment of pinion and main gear

Hi Folks
Does anyone have any helpful hints to get the main gear to mesh with the pinion.
I stripped a main gear last night in about 2 minutes. After removing the gear and installing another one I find it very difficult to get the two to mesh and run smothly. As a matter of fact while thumbing it around I can actually hear it slipping. If I push on the motor to hard it binds and if just let it touch it slips. An Ideas?
