Hi guys,

I am thinking ahead here but would like to know which motor would be a better upgrade for my 500.
I am tossing up between the scorpion motor or the medusa motor. I want to continue to use my battery config which is 2 x 3S Flight power 25C 2500mah packs in series. So keepthat in mind when recommending a motor. By the way I have one of the scorpion motors in my 450and they bloody rock!

Why do you want to upgrade the motor?

What do you want to achieve that the stock motor can not provide?

you can not get good power out of 2x 3s batteries, just pick up some align 6s 2500s and be amazed at a ton more power and headspeed.

Can you explain the difference in power other than the regular negative sides it is to have two packs to be kept balanced as a pair etc.

I remember in the "good old days" when Finless Bob and his friends started to fly the T-rex 500. They used 2x3s packs and were amazed of the power they could get out of this heli.

I know that there some more wires and two more sets of connectors, but to say that you can not get power out of 2 3s packs is beyond me.

There is no logical or technical reason you cannot get the same energy release from a 2x3 series battery as a built 6S battery with the same cells unless you use bad wire and or connectors in your series connector. Sounds like an old (new) wives tale.

That's basically what I fly. I have 3 6s packs composed of 2 3s packs in series (2 air thunder sets and 1 FP Evo 2170). The other packs I fly are an Air Thunder 6s 2200 pack and an FP Evo 25 2500 pack. I would say that the FP may have a little more head speed at the beginning but overall, they all fly about the same.

For 3:30 on a 2500mah pack yes, after that it is landing time.

there is no way to explain it, but it was true in my case. I was using two TP 3s 2200 extremes, then I switched to the align 6s 2500s. there is a lot more power and headspeed.

Love, thats comparing

TP extreme 2200 25C = 55 amps

to

Align 2500 25C = 62.5 amps

If you re-check the threadstarter, he is using 2 x 3S FP 2500 EVO 25.
LoveMyTrex is saying change to Align 6S 2500 25C, as he claims that will give more power.............compared to his own TP 2200. Thats good:thumbup:, but cant help to say thats rather irrelevant to what drozoidberg asked for, isnt it ;)

Stick with the Scorpion - if for no other reason, the customer service is excellent. Lucien is a man of integrity. He has been free and prompt with advice when aptly solicited.

I was thinking about getting a bigger motor when I was running 2x3s because I wasnt happy with the performance, then I got the align 6s and can do anything I want with this heli, it has tons of power. if you stick with 2x 3s I would probably get the scorpion 1400 on 15t or 1600 on 13t, but your flight times will be stupidly short and batteries will be very hot.

Get the Medusa. The flight times are the same. and the motor temps are lower when used with the heat sink. or the same when used with out it. I didnt have any probelms flying the stock motor. I was telling my brother that i dont think i need that Medusa any more. But it was already comming. Now that i got it. WOW its so much stronger and more fun to fly.

Hi dieselracer,

What ESC are you using with the medusa? I've heard that the jazz ESC dosen't like the stock motor much, but if the stock ESC can do well with the medusa, i might want one.

The Align Stock motor is around 196 grams I believe, what is the weight of this new Medusa motor with the Heatsink that is needed?

IIRC the stock motor is around 210. and the Medusa with no heat sink is 230. I wouldnt worry about weght. It didn't affect me, as i am still tail heavy. I have used a CC80 from day one. I dont Trust align ESC's.

my align 500L weighed in around 190 grams. the medusa with heatsink weighed in around 250 grams. i put my 8900 back on the tail to balance it out. so much for shedding weight. still a powerhouse.

Like a few grams matter anyways.

the scorpion 1400kv on 15t is alot of power but i don't like the fact that I am flying only 3.5 minutes. it does drain a 2500mah pack down ALOT! but the trade off is alot of power.

what i find good is, the stock align motor on 14t pinion, now that is fun

Hi Jason,

What headspeed do you get from 14T on stock motor? And flight times?
Also, can the stock ESC handle the amp draw?

Exactamundo!! I think I'm still hovering around the 1920g mark.
