Well, I'm starting to get the hang of autos on the flight sim and might be getting the cahones to try one....soon.

I have not crashed my 550 (KOW) since new....and really did not want to have a self imposed crash. I've tried the 5 ft hover hitting TH, but am not real crazy about it, when the torque comes off the tail swings...

I'm running go-quick 515 blades, z20-980 and stock gears, I have a trex 600 landing gear...

Has anyone had any luck with autos ?

Any good videos of the 550 in auto ?

Hi!
Videos... no, done.... yes
I lost my motor pinion in flight. Was my fault... but came down really well. Really nothing you should be scared of. Much easier than with an 450. I did it with 500 wood blades and worked very well... no I'm using 530mm SAB which are heavier. You have much more time... is pretty much the same as in a simulator.

After many flights I have been mainly turning off the heli by means of auto-rotating. A few feet at a time getting higher and higher at the moment about 8-10 feet was about 2-3feet a month ago. Auto'n helps reduce the HS quickly.

I can auto the hurri from aout 4-5 meters up..... 550 GCT blades... but you only get one try..... so do it right the first time..

just a correction, I am running 515mm blades, not 550's... quick typo...

that's normal for the tail to swing... all you have to do is be prepared for it and counter with a little rudder..

another way to practice autos is... set up a TH curve that doesn't completely cut your power.. just drop it to about 30-40%.. not enough to fly but it helps keep the head speed up a bit.. then shoot an auto from altitude... set a "hard deck" altitude about 15-20 feet above the real ground level and practice landing on that imaginary area.. then go out of TH and fly out of it.. once you get used to doing those, reset the TH curve to cut all power and shoot a real auto...

Of course, sim practice is the best way to learn how to do them... I've been doing them in the sim with my 450.. and doing the 5 foot hover TH autos for real... once I get better at them in the sim and get better at flying my 450, I'll do a real one...AFTER I get my H550 :D that way if the 450 takes a dirt nap, I can still fly

Sims are nice and give you a good way to practice, but I think they are not always like the real heli...

I do not use my actual Tx on the sim so I have no way of knowing what the PC is on the sim Heli.

i have my 550 set up with - 4 on TH...

I may set my IU1 with a low TC and do as mentioned shoot autos and then power out of them....

I also thought of doing the imaginary deck and jut used the TH.....didn't know if maybe it would spool up too slow or put too much of a strain on the OWB.

I just "Hate" the thought of "inducing" my possibly first crash....

But, I was scared to do my first loop and that was a piece of cake...

depending on your radio... you should be able to set the TH to not cut the power completely... have it cut to 30-40% power, that will keep the blades spinning and and not be a shock to the OWB when you come out of it.. it just won't be enough power to fly :D

Anyone done the Autos with the 500 RCP blades ?
I have tried a few times from about 12 to 15 feet,
I think those blades loose momentum fast, Nothing like in Phoenix (sim)

Please share youre experiances

Had to do an emergency auto last week when the power cut out. Yes the RCP CF blades do feel like they lose momentum pretty quick, but coming from a TRex 450 it doesn't seem that bad.

Here's the vid:

Looks like it hit hard during the landing, but I flared pretty good at the end and she landed nice and smooth. Lucky for me she landed on some fallen branches, otherwise it would've gone deep into the grass and might've gotten damaged.

Auto's with the Hurricane is easy, just climb around 25m hit throttle hold pull the collective down into the negative -2,3 is about right, you can see the head speed drop if so add a little more negative to speed it up, you can see the head speed up then once you are in the zone try to maintain some foward speed and as you reach the ground add in more collective (around 1-2.5 m) to flare and let the heli settle, it will be hovering and losing head speed then add more collective as the heli lands thats you have done it.

I have the carbon 550 blades on they make a great sound as they swing through the air and help maintain momentum on auto's

Good luck Allan :YeaBaby:

My 450 used to swing like that when I had a cheaper gyro (telebee), but now that i run a 2100T I have not noticed it. Never seen it on my 550 (also using a 2100T).

I have tried my hurri with 550mm CF blades at about 100feet height, I hit the TH then shifted the throttle to slightly lower then middle stick, shift back the stick to about hovering position when it reach about 4 ft then slower increase it base on "feeling"....

It was really fun to "auto" the hurri, I'm sure you will like it once you have tried it.
