It depends on the gyro. I think most people with 401s are putting them in the back to get them away from aileron/pitch servo electrical interference.
I have a JR G770 that I put in front on the optional Align gyro tray and, thus far, I have had no problems with it there. The G770 has a metal case, which may help with interference issues. I don't want mine in the back because I don't want to hassle with it whenever doing work on the tail, which has been happening far too often lately due to crashes. I may change my mind once I convert my tail from torque tube to belt, since the only time I should have to mess with the boom case is when replacing the belt; with the torque tube, almost every crash requires pulling the boom case and replacing stripped gears (which is a large part of the reason I'm doing the conversion).

I have my Logictech 6100 mounted directly to the top of the front cyclic servos. I had the optional servo mount but the gyro would hit the canopy so I removed the mount, without ill effect.

it's up to you , personal preference , it's not going to be better one way or the other. i prefer up front out of the oil and dirt...

I placed mine up front for CofG reasons and get the cleanliness as a bonus. The tail boom block is covered in oil after a days flying.

The gyro tray is a nice option I have one but my RX rides there. I owuld like to put my 401 there but I like to visually confirm I am in HH mode when it boots up.

What happend to" gyro on top = bad " does it not apply to these bigger birds?

That's a good point. You should still be able to see up under the canopy if you orient the gyro with the LED toward the rear of the heli. I don't have that concern with my G770: it doesn't have any indicators as to what mode it's in, other than observing the pitch behavior when applying rudder input.

I guess with the metal cased servos like the 611 or those with separate metal shield like the Spartan it's less of an issue - I like the back for the gyro and keep the front gyro mount for the switch module of the 2 in 1 - I do try to mount it away from the bearing though

has anyone seen gyro protectors that will work for the Solid-G ?

Please correst me if I am wrong but Finless said this in relation to the T-Rex 450. Basically mounting the gyro on top of the boom block made it susceptible to damage in the event of a boom strike.
This was addressed in the V2 and the boom blocks modified to allow a gyro to be fitted underneath.
So in relation to the T-Rex 600 mounting it up front on top of the servos is not a problem.

I have more crashes on my Raptor 50's than I want to admit. The 401 is on top there and never damaged one. The frame gives it some protection on a bigger heli. the 450 leaves it wide open. I dont like it under the boom on my 450sa either. i put it under the battery tray and the RX under the boom. 401= $139 AR6100=$49.;)
