View Full Version : First Nitro Evo 50 suggested parts?
Ok guys, my wife bought me an evo 50 and I have the kit mostly assembled. I fly alone at this point, and the closest hobby shop is 45 miles away. I am hoping to join a club this year, but not until this heli is ready to fly. I have been doing some searching here and found this to be the likely setup.
OS 50 Hyper
Curtis Youngblood Muscle Pipe
9252 servos
Gy401 w/9254 tail servo
AR7000 receiver (as I already have a dx7 for my trex 450)
First off, any recommendations or changes in the parts I have selected and why. Secondly what else am I going to need to finish? Do I need a voltage regulator or a governer. I have read that I don't need a governer to start, but highly recommended I beleive. And finally what field equiptment and fuel recommendations do you guys have?
Thank you all for you info.

Thats a pretty good setup. Here's an article you may find helpful

Thank you, that is a big help. Greatly appreciated!

Hey Andy, Thats a great review! I'm thinking about buying another Evo 50 myself and have two 50s, the Vibe50 and Evo50. I think that would make a great pair. I had an Evo a few years back and it was a great bird.

Shameless plug... :YeaBaby:
In addition I would suggest using alloy pitch and aileron arms if you use HPM. Another would be the SD-G radius block and washout set.
I use the EX swash. Expensive bugger but absolutely no slop what-so-ever.
Finally, derlin (or whatever it's called) white gears.

Wha? <innocent look>
Well I picked up my OS50 Hyper and a couple servos today. Ended up going with JR DS8317's. The LHS "Heli Expert" is a JR Freak and talked me into them. Now he is trying to get me to go to a JR 770 gyro (I think that was the right number) and a new brushless servo for the tail. The tail servo, and I don't recall the number, was around $150. The Wife wasn't too happy with my want to drop another few hundred on top of what I had already purchased, lol. Oh well next trip.
So my next question. JR 770 or GY 401 ...... and what servo to go with it.
I can already see my next problem is going to be learning where to mount the electronics and how to run the wires. I am gonna go searching for pics, but if you freaks have any good pictures of how you have done this, I would be greatly appreciative!!

Personally I think the 401 has been outclassed by many gyros. Yes it is inexpensive and works ok, but there are better gyros out there now. The JR 500 is a pretty good leap ahead of the 401 and the 770 should be even better. I have also heard very good things about the logitech as well. CSM seems to have a good product as well. 560 I think?
Anyway when you get to really wring out your heli with a 401 you will see the tail kick and not move consistently through piro maneuvers. I have seen some guys that could fly the snot of a 401, but I have never found the secret. All that is to say there have been 8(?) years of technology improvement since the 401.
The servo is kind of up to you. Anything with speed quicker than .1 second over 60º will do fine. Of course the quicker the better. The LHS guy was probably trying to sell you one of the new futaba units, BLS something or other. They would be an excellent servo from the specs I remember, as would the JR 8900g, but anything that is lightning quick is going to be pricey. I use futaba 9253s that came with my old 401s. They work well.
A governor is not required at all, I flew my Evo a lot without one. Set the curves up and throw in some cyclic to throttle mix, and it will fly well. A governor is like the sprinkles on the frosting on the cake. Once again here there have been several years of technological improvement since the GV-1 (like look ahead mix that watched the movement of the throttle channel to predict where the servo will need to go). I would suggest something newer like a multigov or a throttle jockey or a revlock.
The only upgrades the evo seems to need are the metal washout guide, and the delrin gears for durability. I don't see any other option parts that will truly improve the flying characteristics or durability. I got mu evo used with the SWM stuff on it, and it flies well, but I can't say there is a night and day difference between that and any other conventional mix heli I have flown.
Best of luck. You will like the evo 50, it is a good machine.
Thank you all for the info, it is very helpful!!! I am hoping to get the Evo completely ready in the next few weeks, money permitting. So Far it has been fun and educational to build this heli. I can't thank my support at the LHS enough either. I honestly didn't want to go to nitro, at least not yet, but so far I am enjoying it!!! Actually thinking about selling the trex to help fund the nitro, lol!!!
Thank you all again!

I've found my Trex(es) to be like flakey high school chicks compared to the experienced woman in my Evo 50...:YeaBaby:
Although I haven't gone out with flakey high school chicks for over 25 years or so.
I'll keep one in the Agusta body but I'm getting rid of the other one.

I think that is probably one of the funniest comparisons of anything that I have ever heard!! Couldn't stop laughing.
I'm down to needing a few servo's and making the decision on stealing the gy401 from the trex or getting the g7703d JR gyro. I also need to decide which Rx battery I am going to get. Then some fuel and field equipment and time to go fly!!!! I honestly can't wait. I am hoping all the hours put into this machine don't dissappoint me! And as I looked over at it, I just reallized I don't have a muffler yet either. The list keeps growing, LOL!!

you asked about the fuel used , mine runs on Wildcat 30 % . Cool power seems like a popular one around here.
Picked up almost everything now. Ended up with 8317's on the controls, 7703d gyro with ds890 for the tail, revolution pipe, ar7000 receiver, 2000 mah 5 cell NiMH battery with spektrum voltage regulator. Also picked up alot of the small stuff like glow extension, filters, line t's, and line plugs, etc... Just need to get a new clunk line and some fuel line, and all my field equipment. Almost there!!! :)
Thank you all for the info and help, it is greatly appreciated. Jeffs450se, thank you for the pics!!

Glad the pics were helpful..have you chosen your starter yet? the torqumaster 180 hd is a popular one, and its super easy to make it cordless!!
No, no starter yet. I'm considering using my 18v cordless drill as I understand you can do, as long as you have the one way bearing on the starter extension. Still working on putting the kit together. Finding all the little stuff I missed and going back through double checking my work. Working on trying to figure out the proper way to plump the fuel lines with the header tank tonight. I am really excited to try a new gyro. The 401 is the everyones trusted and true piece, but it is technology that is a few years old and I'm thinking that New technology could be good for me to learn. The LHS described this gyro as a "hot little gyro". Right now my skills are no where near needing that type of performance, but I didn't want to have to switch later. Also started the charging cycles for my new battery tonight. 2000 mAh Nimh charging at .1 amps on 5 cycles, this is going to take a while LOL.
