View Full Version : What is the best blades to crash with? :-)

Behind the perhaps somewhat strange subject, lies a serious question.

I had a HBK2 with carbon blades and I managed to total it on its 3 battery, and I believe that much of the mayhem was caused by the carbon blades.

Back to the question:
When I am going to fly my new Gaui 200 I will crash like everybody else. Which blades do the least damage to the rest of the heli in case of a crash?

I would rather fly with "less good" blades with less damage during a crash, than "optimal" blades with "optimal" damage during a crash - if you get my point. :YeaBaby:

From experience I have to say woods are the best to crash with....

First crash was with plastic blades, hit throttle hold too... damage was all in the head, I split the feathering shaft in half both blades came off, therefore dislodging and cracking most links in the head, broke both washout to swash links, both of the washout to seesaw links, one link on the flybar.

Second crash wood blades....

Broke the blades, sheared both off right in the middle, looked at my TX for a split second and she was in the wall. Damage was a popped ball in the tail slider, and blades. Again I hit throttle hold very quick so there was no more damage.

my poor gooie went in on a bad auto, not sure why I even tried to auto, guess I thought it was my 450 for a minute, plastic blades transfered all th energy to the linkaged, ball links rippedout of the swash and upper seasaw mixing lever, very annoying, needed to order a new swash, gonna switch to wood blades, they fly better and seem to damange the heli less, and at 8 dollars...

Do the wooden blades come with the plastic pieces at the root now?

yes they have plastic roots as far as I can tell, not a bad blade well balanced out of the package

It seems as if I will keep my new 200 grounded until the woodies arrives. :)

I'll echo the sentiments about woodies, the more I fly the more I like 'em.
I joke a lot about my carbon fetish, but honest, I've got one set of carbon blades for the CP-Pro, used mostly for showing off, the woodies seem to feel about the same, at least at my sedate level, the ABS blades are dogs, and as I've posted elsewhere, seem to move the point of failure to more expensive parts, like my carbon tail boom.

However in the 400 world, I've seen videos of heli's blowing up when the woodies came apart, typically up in the 3000+rpm range.

Probably not a problem for us, even at our higher headspeeds, but one trick I learned from the T-Rex guys is to epoxy the plastic mounts to the blade, then re-balance.

Now I'm looking at my woodies that just came in. It appears that the plastic is already glued on. I don't want to tear them up just yet, but we'll take a better look after the first crash. They look pretty good! CG and total balance is right on! Hey, for $8 a set, and 'specially if they're really pre-glued, these are okay.

you have convinced me to go woodies with my 3S 1100kV setup since I got 850mAh gaui batteries now
