View Full Version : Yet another gasser glitch

I have Raptor 60 converted to gasser with 231 PUH.
After sorting out glithes from ignition (shielding HT cable and ferrite rings helped), today engine went to idle for a maybe 0.5 second while hovering...
This happend after maybe 5 min of hovering maybe 2 foots from the ground - heli droped on the ground, and engine started working again.
Failsafe is set to idle on throttle, I have running JR 9xII with 9 channel reciever (not sintezed).
I`ve taken this on video...

What happens to engine can be seen on the sound track - looks like speed reduces for a moment, the encreases, and goes to idle...

And my spark plug (champion)

Is your collective set to "hold" or 0 degrees of pitch?

It was set to 0 degree pitch...
-----------------------------------------
Changed plug to NGK, changed plug cap to NGK - problem still here. Changed throttle servo to brand new - didn`t helped.
Put wire coil around HT lead and grouded it - didn`t helped...
checked grey coil resistance...
Resistance is 2.09k (2.1k according Zenoah). Tried to heat up a little bit coil - resistance raised to 2.11k.

Do you have a base loaded antenna or the full length wire?

I have full lenght antenna..
Yesterday I tested heli with collective set to "hold".
After that, heli is staying in the air, just engine enters fail safe for a part of second. Tail kicks a little bit and thats all.
That happens twice per tank (~20 mins).
That means, that all channels goes into fail safe (because cyclic is set to center possition).
Actually I don`t know what else can I change on this heli - I`ll changed RX - will test it today.

what is the plug gap ? 20 thou seems to work best , any more can generate rf noise as the coil/lead/plug has to work harder ....

plug gap is set to 0.002 (0.5mm)...

With the full length antenna, how is the wire routed? You must keep it as far from the ignition system (both coils, HT lead, spark plug) as possible. For this reason we suggest a base loaded antenna routed out the front of the heli.
I suspect that it is actually something else on the heli causing it, this isn't a belt drive tail is it?

Check to make sure the coil that goes to the spark plug is screwed down well and the screw that grounds it is nice and tight. It is loose and it allows the contact ground to the coil to be intermittent, it will cause failsafes.
This is one of many things you should check.

check to see if your main coil has come loose, and rubbing the magneto ..

problem found
Well, looks like I`ve found a problem - it was fan shroud, which was in contact with metal frames.
Pictures says everything.

Flew heli twice - hoorray, no more gltiches here.
Thanks to everyone who helped me to solve this problem...

Well, what do you know...Glad you found it.
Is this one of the infamous Zaptorgasser conversions?

Is this one of the infamous Zaptorgasser conversions?
No, thats not zaptorgasser conversion. I made it myself folowing Fixit`s way of doing it...
Everything works extremelly well except this poor quality part (which I made myself :) )
