View Full Version : Tail slider and links very sloppy

I am setting up my Gaui 200 and 2100T gyro, but I am having problems with the tail.

If the tail slider slides all the way to the boom side of the tail rotor shaft, it can "over center" (in lack of a better word - I do not know the term in English) and lock the blades/blade grips.

I think the tail slider, tail grips and links seem very sloppy and loose, and I do not have the "guts" to maiden it, before I get that fixed.

Any suggestions, please!

Trust me, you do not want to set up the tail so that the slider can go all the way to the boom. What you have mentioned is a common mistake and this will lead to major issues in flight. You basically have about 3/4 of the tail rod to work with here and its the 3/4 thats away from the boom and up to the tail blade hub. The pitch slider should be just left of center of that 3/4 working area giving you a bit of positive pitch on the blades to start with. Having a bit of positive pitch on the tail blades to start with will lessen the effects of the tail wanting to swing to the right on take off.

The tail on this heli is in my opinion pretty hard to set up at first because very small changes to the pitch of the tail blades result in big changes in the attitude of the tail. There is definitely a sweet spot, and you shouldn't be looking to achieve the maximum range of the tail pitch slider. Make sure that you set up the tail with your gyro in rate mode first, and once you have little to no drift in rate, land and switch to heading hold.

You don't need that much movement, change the end-points so that you can't move the tail slider that far

Don't use the end points. Adjust the position of the tail servo on the boom to get as close as possible to "perfect" and you probably won't need to use end points at all.

Thanks a lot for your input - it makes perfect sense.

But I still think the whole tail "arrangement" seems very sloppy and loose.

Is there nothing to be done about this? I don't feel comfortable bringing it into the air, when it feels as if you can blow the tail apart, just by breathing hard. :)

Trust me, the tail isn't going to just fall apart. Make sure the screws that hold the tail blades in place are not to tight. There should be just a little resistance to movement of the tail blades by touching them, Be sure to locktite those screws in place because they will eventually back out otherwise. I lost a tail blade screw in a hover, got lucky and didn't break or bend anything in the resulting minor crash. I have also lost the tail in a lock up that you described in your post while in a hover. Again I got lucky and didn't break or bend anything.

The tail is a bit loose and the links are a bit flimsy looking but in the 2 fairly serious crashes that I had none of the tail parts were responsible for the crash or broke in the crash. No fff or 3d yet though, just hovering, so my opinion could very well change at a later date.

I think the manual does very little to explain this. It is almost as bad as the manual for the 2100T gyro.

Anyhow, is there any way to upgrade the tail and slider, because I really don't like the way it is now.

Thanks a million

Flying-Hobby.com has some after market tails and there is always the MicroHeli tail.

i'm using the microheli tail, and once i got the bugs worked out of it, it works great. i used red loctite on all screws on it. blue loctite was not doing the job. also, a little ca on the tail boom helps too. if you smack the tail down hard on landing, it turns the whole tail, so take it easy on landings. no screws have ever come loose in flight ...yet.

That sure sound tempting! :)

Could you help me with a link, please?
