Is the 500 DX still a viable heli or has the 500 3D made it obsolete? Im probably not pharsing that right. I just want to know if the 500DX would need some kind of bearing upgrades or whatever to be a good heli that would last someone like me, who will never be a 3D flyer, a good, long time with proper care.

I have a 600dx from revolution models (UK) and I'd say it fits that bill very nicely.

The DX are perfectly viable helis - no probs - even though the 3D do upgrade some plastic or sleeved parts there are plenty to wear even on the 3D series eg idler wheels, tail rotor pulley, tail idler pulley.. IMHO the 3D canopies are WAY cool but if the DX floats your boat - go for it !
