We finally got a decent day to fly, about 50*F, light winds, so my plan was to head home, get the heli and go fly. I also wanted to go through the setup again, especially with the governor, just to make sure I had everything working. Plus, I wanted to set the gyro gain. I set it at 70% and I never messed with it or changed it. On top of that, my 11T pinion came in and I even thought about trying that.

First mistake was trying to change the pinion. First I stripped the head on one of the motor screws, which I had to drill out, then I stripped the set screw on the new pinion. So much for that experiment. At least I know a good way to get the motor out and back in now. Unfortunately, it was a real comedy of errors and I wasted a good 1:15.

I got it all back together and I went outside with the laptop and the Castle Link cable. First I saved my current ESC settings, the I changed it back to heli fixed mode. I programmed in a throttle curve of 0-50-65-75-100 and started testing the gyro. First I checked for trim, so I changed to rate mode, 30% gain, I needed a turn of right trim on the ball link and I was right on. Back to HH mode and I started playing with the gain. 75, 78, 80, and finally 85% before I started getting tail wobble. 80% worked pretty well. I was flying at 70%, who knew.

Back to the ESC. Throttle curve to 0-0-0-0-0, throttle stick at 50% and push the % up to 75% and read the rpm. That was 2300. 85% was 2380. Back to the programmer and switch it back to governor mode. Push the throttle up until I got 2300 rpm, which was at 62.5%. Then I went for 2450, which was 68% and then I set S2 to 72%. So I go to fly it and I got the tail kick back. I lowered the gyro gain and it didn't really make a difference, so back on the programmer and I lowered the governor gain from 33 to 30. That did it. Hover around a little, it's all good, off to a park where there is room to fly.

First battery pack is the one I used for most of the setup, so I just flew around a little. wind was moderate 5-8 gusting to 12. and it flew pretty good. About 3 minutes of that and I put in fresh battery pack. Spool it up again, switch to idle-up and off we go. It's flying good, I climbed up to about 3 mistakes high and, I flipped it. Ended up doing a couple of back flips a front flip and a roll. I ended up running the timer down and then I landed.

Like I said, what flippin' night. I bet from the title you thought I was going to crash. Maybe sometime, just not tonight. I still have to try that 11T pinion. I guess I'll get another one and try not to strip it.

Skigolfmike,
I want to see your 550 in flight. Can you give the link Thanks Oh one more thing Mike I like your throttle curve 0-65-75-85-100 is good at hover.

I haven't flow the 550 yet. I'm waiting on a front main gear that should get here today. I will puts videos when I get it flying. I need to work on my flips and get some videos of those.
