I'm gathering parts for a Spectra-G with a Hanson 231. Of the various mufflers that'll fit this combination, which are the most quiet? I understand there is a trade-off between power and noise output and am fine with that.
From what I've read the Zimmerman and Torpedo v3 are good candidates. Are there any others worth considering?
Thanks

I’d go the Hatori 957
I had a Torpedo v3 on my Hanson 260 and it snapped the exhaust manifold of the engine Not Happy
I have 2 gassers, my 231 has always had a Hatori on it never given me any problems they have a better mounting system ,and also it is quieter than the V3 Torpedo!!!

How in the heckdid your V3 break the manifold on the engine??? In a crash??? Then I would say it was the crash that did so.
I and four other club mates have been using the Torpedos for a number of years now and have been very happy with them and have never heard of any muffler causing the maniflod on the moror to break????
ANf how much quieter was the hatori in SPL??
I found them to be similar in SPL, just different in tone.

Hey Gyro Al
Never had a crash with my Spectra’s touch wood!
Every flight no matter what I did to keep the V3 on the engine it came loose, ie from the best loctite you can get to JB weld so go figure!!
This is what caused the engine to break and plus to add salt to the wound there was no engine warranty over this issue.
Could be I got a bad casting who knows!! But when it all boils down to it the V3 was on the engine at the time.
Very costly exercise rebuild engine and go to what I should have brought in the first place a Hatori!!!
From my gasser experience of having both mufflers the Hatori was and is quieter!!! But then again I could be deaf!!
For sale one nice shiny V3 Torpedo!!!! Boat anchor
Each one to there own Gyro

So the Hatori 957 and Century Torpedo v3 both sound like reasonable choices. Does anyone have comparable experience with the Zimmerman muffler?
Also, a significant component of the engine sound is induction noise from the intake. Which air filter/air box options are more quiet than others?
Thanks

Miniature Aircraft makes an air filter that is designed for the Zenoah engines. It's basically a K&N-style filter for around $30: http://www.miniatureaircraftusa.com/Store/proddetail.asp?prod=125%2D120
You can also find similar filters that are designed for GoPed scooters, many of which use 23-30 cc engines with similar carbs. As an example: http://www.davesmotors.com/store/airfilters.html Select an air filter and you'll see which velocity stack is necessary for your engine.

Patty:
The reason your crankcase broke is that a) you had problems with the v3 muffler staying on and you were cranking the bolts down hard, and b) more importantly, its possible the bolts were long and they bottomed out of the cylinder and pushed the threads apart from the cylinder.
I guy I know did this same exact thing here, using a v3 on a G23 original motor. The bolt pushed on the cylinder and broke the head from tightening. You may have not noticed this at the time of tightening and later thought it was from flight.
If all is good and happy, you're not going to break the cylinder just flying around. I have close to 450 flights on mine with the v3 with no issues.
Soundwise, the v3 sounds deeper and much nicer than the Hatori which in my opinion sounds tinny.
Costwise, you can get almost two v3's for the price of one Hatori. Go figure!
Mountwise, you need 4 bolts to attach the hatori and cannot retighten the inner bolts while hot, whereas with the v3 a long 4mm allen screwdriver does the trick.
At the bottom line, its whatever you fancy!

Hi Raja
Yes that was the reason my crankcase broke, I made sure the bolts weren’t to long and didn’t bottom out on the cylinder.
I guess it was just one of them things that just happen, I wasn’t meant to have a V3 on my number 2 Speckey I’m over it now!!
As for the cost of the Hatori you are dead right, I can’t figure out why the Hatori is so expensive when you can get a V3 for around $135 USD.you got me on that one hehehehehehehe
The Hatori has got 4 bolts to hold the sucker on but I like the idea of the stainless steel adaptor, unlike the V3. That’s just me.
Sound wise I tend to like the Hatori!
When I built up my second Spectra G I didn’t want it to be the same layout as my 231, ie Tempest head, Hanson 260, & V3 muffler!!
At the end of the day it is what you fancy.
Happy Flying
