View Full Version : How does NiMH charger know number of cells?

I have the Duratrax intellipeak discharger/charger. It says it charges 4-8 cells (with AC) but there is no setting for number of cells. I am cycling 7 cell packs. So how does the charger know what voltage to charge to? Especially after the discharge when the pack voltage is small.

It doesn't need to know.
NiMh is charged using 'peak detect'. That is it charges the pack at a constant current, with a slowly increasing voltage, when the pack is full the voltage starts to drop and the cells warm up. The charger detects this 'peak' in voltage and knows its time to turn off.
Totally different charging method to LiPo batteries.

Is it the same with NiCd?
