Spektrum DX7 or JR X9303. DX7 <$300, X9303 roughly $600.
-OR-
Buy a Futaba receiver and swap it out. $100 for a 7ch Futaba Rx and 30 mins to swap it out and program the radio.

Depends on where you fly and how many other people are flying at or near your area. If you are the only person for miles, like me, you probably don't need to run out and buy a DX7. If you do fly with others and can afford the cost of a DX7 plus an extra rx for the 450's, then the DX7 is the way to go. My b-day is coming up next month and I am thinking a DX7 will probably be my gift to myself just because one day I am sure I will fly with other people...

Buying a good "glitchless" radio like a DX7 is not just good for flying when near others. Even when flying alone, it has other benefits.
1. It is "glitchless". I've had radios that glitched causing random issues. Not yet with the DX7.
2. It can simplify setup- in that you can separate the steps, change the throws of the servos, change the endpoints to match your needs, visually see the throttle and pitch curves, etc. A DX7 gives you 5 point pitch and throttle curves whereas the x9303 gives you 7 points to allow adjustment at. It simplifies it because you can easily make adjustments to a lot of the mechanicals that cheaper radios just don't allow you to.
3. It allows you to use positive and negative expo on your controls. Slight positive expo on a DX7 will desensitize the sticks- which might be better for newbies as they try to learn better control..
4. The DX7, X9303, and such similar transmitters can handle having multiple models assigned to it. Rather than figuring out the look and feel of another new transmitter when you upgrade your birds, you can use one consistently and program it to how you like it.
5. There are other numerous features on these transmitters. Some you will NEVER use. Others you might. The differences between flying a cheap transmitter and a decent one makes it a worthwhile expense. Heck, you might even find out that it helps your flying.

Thats true, but he said he has a Futaba tx. Even if he has the bottom rung tx he still has multiple model, 5 point curves, expo, etc. 2.4 is good stuff but it is not the end of all interference, just a reduction. There are people who are managing to struggle through that whole 72mhz thing without issue. I stand by my belief that it is situational/financial, not "lets be like the cool kids" fanboy set. I will say if he only has a 6 channel, he might want a 7 channel so he can run a governor on that nitro, and if he is going to buy a 7 channel tx, he might as well buy a DX7. Or maybe I am the lucky one who has never had a issue with 72mhz. I still want a DX7, mostly for future nitro/flying with others plans but I am not going to rush out and burn the cash just because it is the popular thing to do.

I second your "pro-motion".
Would like to add that the "Airtronics" RDS8000 warrents consideration along the 2.4 line.
