View Full Version : Is my bird supposed to drop (lose altitude) when I do cyclic inputs?

Hi,

I'm new to helis and I'm learning to hover my Blade 400, so please forgive this noob question. When I am hovering, and I give left and right cylic inputs or quick rudder, the heli wants to drop (lose altitude). Is this normal? Should I have to give more collective at the same time that I give cyclic, or is something wrong with my bird? It almost seems like what happens with a fixed wing aircraft when you bank, but don't give enough rudder to make a coordinated turn, so the plane slides and looses lift. Is that what's happening here?

Without getting too technical, yes, it's basically the same thing.

That used to happen to me, but then I realized I was actually pushing down on the throttle stick when I used the rudder. Sometimes I would accidentally push the throttle up or down without realizing it and the heli would rise or fall when I tried to turn. It had to do with more of my thumb coordination than aerodynamics.

You shouldn't lose much altitude at all if any while hovering! Also make sure you are hovering at least 4 feet up and are out of prop wash effect.

I flew today, and it seemed like I wasn't having the issue with the heli dropping on cyclic inputs. It was hovering pretty well. I guess I'm getting better. Plus there was no wind today. Every day I've flown previously since I first started has been windy.

I don't know what it's like to fly out of ground effect. I'm too scared to go above two feet yet. LOL. I will soon.
