I have a Canon A640. Is a wide angle lens/adaptor (they are expensive almost as much as the camera itself) a must or can you get away without it.I understand there is a heli hight verses distance to the subject verses lens angle that is to be considered.
What are your thoughts?

Well the main advantage of the wide-angle converter is that you don't have to fly so far from your subject to get a certain field of view .... so if you're trying to capture a large area of land, rather than having to speck out your model you could fly that little bit closer. It's a personal decision really - I don't use one with my A620 simply because of the lens' weight.
Whilst we're on the subject, don't be tempted to go for a cheaper wide-angle converter as you WILL lose image quality. The Canon converters are very good quality and they maintain very good image clarity, unlike the cheaper third party ones.
My 2p :)

Listen to David, or.... listen to me. I'm with David. I got a cheap WA setup with my A640. It's a Digital Concepts. The real problem isn't the Brand so much as the Dealer's packaging of third party products. The barrel adapter for the A640 ends with 52 mm threads. This should really be wider though. I have to zoom in the lens to get rid of the barrel adapter in the picture. The end result is I only gain about 25 to 30 % more field of view. It's a .45 X lens. I should be getting at least 100% more ! I've heard good things too of the Canon .7 X. It probably gets as much or more field-of-view as my cheapie.
