View Full Version : Learned a lesson today

Learned that the best gyro out there can't help unless I turn the switch on! So I FINALLY got my GY401 and new 9257 servo dialed in yesterday and was outside flying and tweaking my B400. I turned the gyro to rate mode (gain at 50%) and was trying to trim it in rate. Well being new...there was NO WAY that was happening. So I took off forgetting to put it into HH mode....and the heli went all over the place and crashed. Landed upside down and destroyed the head. I am having to teach myself how to fly this thing and I have managed to fly for 2 months without crashing and I go down because I forgot to arm the gyro :arggg:

I must say that considering the damage, the repair is fairly cheap so far. I'm up to $40 and I think that should do it. I bought a new main gear with a new one way bearing....but there was no one way bearing in the package. I am now on hold till one comes in.

So on that note.....how on earth would one fly one of these things in rate mode?????? There was ZERO control when I flipped the switch and it goes into HH mode above 50%. At 50% or below, it is absolutely unflyable......

I'm new to and I actually have no prob with all the stock electronics but I'm just hovering tail in but with a nice head wind gyro seems pretty solid.

It's a blast, no? Stock was okay....I was just fighting the tail a bit too much for my taste when I was attempting nose in. Just started doing figure 8s (SLOWLY) and to be honest I am having most trouble side in. I started doing things a bit higher up and it gives me time to swing the tail around if I get into trouble. Unfortunately I made a dumb mistake on the ground that caused me to lose control in the air. I'm actually enjoying putting it back together.....just not enjoying shelling out the cost. I'm sure there will be more to come.

in rate mode you have to hold your tail manualy almost as if you dont have one
a bit hard but do-able

as good practice do a good preflight and post flight checks
helps from elect and mechanical errors

I envy you guys, forward flight, figure 8s Wow I wish can do that. I'm still hovering and fighting the wind in my backyard. Oh and I still have my gear for insurance purposes only. Well it has been a month now so I'm getting there.

Hay Sokal guess what I saw in my work today. A UH-60 in my high school football field. I was stunned and well I took a picture also.

At 50% the gyro is not actually on at all. Above 50% brings in HH mode increasing the gain as the % rises. below 50% is in rate mode, increasing the gain as the % decreases.

So in other words, if you are flying comfortably at 75%, you are at 50% gain in HH mode. The equivalent gain in rate mode would be 25% on the TX, which represents 50% gain rate mode.

At 50% on the TX there is only very little movement on the servo at max travel, so it would be almost impossible to control.

 the one way bearing is already installed in the gear. Thats why its 9 bucks vs. 4, they install it for you. :YeaBaby:

That poor Blackhawk. There should be a Humvee or a field gun slung under there. The BH should be flying with 'em. LOL

Yah with a 3400g and the stock gyro(pos) Ive managed to get the gain to 25% in rate mode wich is very flyable. Reminds me of the cx2 tail but better. I find its good practice and I fly in rate about half the time. For some reason even with the rod in the lowest servo hole and nice and setup I cant get the rate in HH above 72% without tail wagging while doing piros. It also still requires a little subtrim no matter what I do, I think only 5 clicks to the left so its not all that much.Im hoping the trex boom mounts will help mabye by being about to adjust it a little that way but Im not holding my breath... So im chalking it up to the gyro and saving for a 401.

Yeah, I have just bit the bullet and bought a Hitec 5000 combo pack. Not the best on the market but a good improvement on the stock setup and cost me half what the 401 combo would have. Finless's only gripe about it was the piro rate, and to be honest I dont think that is a great issue for me. Looking more for forward flight and hover stability than 3D.
