I am in the Process of finishing my Hurricane 550, I have done alot of research into gyro's and have narrowed it down to either the Curtis Solid-G or the Spartan DS760. I do use the Futaba Gy-401 on all my smaller heli's, however I feel than the larger one should have a top of the line gyro. Is anyone utilizing either of these and if so what is your opinion of each. Thanks In Advance..

Hello Bill,I went with the 401 on my 550 and have no regrets. After getting the proper headspeed set up, the 401 now works perfect.

I have the Spartan gyro and it rocks! I've never used a 401 so can't give you a direct comparison but I decided to go with the Spartan for a few reasons:
Easier programming/setup. No need to mess with rate mode (other than to set your tx up to toggle between rate/HH mode so you can get into the programming mode in the first place).
Firmware upgradeable via USB FlashLink. No other gyro is firmware upgradeable to my knowledge.
Only gyro that initializes correctly with Spektrum/JR 2.4GHz receivers on power-up. In particular, the Spartan will wait to initialize itself until after the receiver initializes.
Extremely lightweight. Both gyros are great though and you can't go wrong either way...

I use the 401 on my 550 with the gain set at about 60% and it's rock solid.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try the 401 seeing I have a spare, then most likely go to the Spartan when they become more available.

Good idea. The 401 and 601 have been solid for me when tested with the JR 921, AR6100, AR6200, AR7000 and the AR9000. No need for any firmware updates for me because they are solid as is and work with all the RX's I've tried. No initialization issues or problems at all with rate mode setup or locking in HH at startup.. both gyros were set up in minutes and lock in just fine. I simply set up the tail mechanically, plugged em in, set the gain (normal=89, S1=86, S2=83 and they flew rock solid on full collective hits with the z20 and Z30. I use HH mode for most of my flights but the rate modes are smooth for scale flights. I did think about upgrading to a level above the 601, but then I thought.. well, if the tail holds rock solid with a 401 and 601 and i can't shake it at my skill level, why dump $ for a better upgrade? For me, the whole point was to hold the tail as hard as i can push the heli, and they do. When that changes, I'll upgrade. :)

I have a 401/S9254 on my 550 with something around 100 flights on it. I have a Spartan DS760 here that I was hoping to fit and test this weekend but the weather looks pretty dire if I believe the forecast.
I had a couple of reasons for wanting to try the DS760. One was curiosity - I have 5 GY401s in various applications so I'm very familiar with them, and was interested to try something else.
The second reason is that (along with, apparently, better performance characteristics) the DS760 is supposed to have a much more consistent piro rate than the 401. This helps when you start doing more 3D stuff (apparently) and I'm trying to learn that stuff so anything that helps is welcomed.
Once I get a chance to set it up and fly a few packs I'll post my experience.

I would be very interested in your opinion and comparison of the two gyro's. I hope to be flying mine with the 401 this weekend.
