View Full Version : Is DX6i possible with HBFP?
I"m thinking of getting a HBFP to learn some FFF, instead of crashing my B400 or Trex 600, I can hover them all day long, but I need something I'm not worried about crashing.
So my question is can I use my DX6i with the HBFP, if so how do I set it up?

Not with the stock receiver, of course - but you can pull out the receiver board of the 4-in-1 and use disassembled servo extension cables to connect a compatible 2.4 GHz receiver. Just be careful taking it all apart.
I still haven't heard anyone confirm if the new Esky 2.4 GHz 4-in-1s are compatible with Spektrum technology, but I would be amazed if they weren't.
The third option is a bit more involved, mainly because of the tail motor mixing. You *could* just get an FP barebones kit and fit all-separate electronics, but you'd need a HH gyro and separate speed controller to drive the tail motor. That would be a lot of weight for an FP to carry, and it may be a bit upmarket for what you're trying to accomplish.
Yeah I did some reading and pretty much figured it out too. Thanks for the quick and thorough reply though, I just wanted to use the DX6i to keep it familiar to me for my bigger helis. But I guess I wil just use the stock radio. Adding all of that aftermarket stuff will change it from a cheap 100 dollar beater/FFF trainer into something that cost too much money and effort to just go crashing around with.

You really would have to pitch the esky 4in1. Unless you do some serious hacking
The e-flite 3 in 1 (http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=38_236_267&products_id=2593) would be just the ticket for this little project.
e-flite 2 in 1 (http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?cPath=38_236_266&products_id=2595) and your own HH gryo

Would you be kind enough to elaborate just a little bit on that? At least let me help you;
1/ eflite 3 in 1 & DX6i is good. Why?
or
2/ eflite 2 in 1 and my HH gyro (any make?) is good. Why?

Sure no problem, First you need a 6100 or 6300 reciever. Then,
The Eflite 3in1, Motor controler, mixer and gyro, This will control the main motor, tail motor, tail gyro and give you a BEC to run your radio. Lightweight and not terribly expensive. I would call this your best bet as it will fit in the nose of the hbfp with the radio easily, and is a complete plug and play option. No cutting, soldering or fooling with things that are not meant for a micro heli. Plug it all together, set the swash and go fly in about an hour.
The 2 in 1 is a motor controler tail motor controller and BEC . You need to add a tail gryo. This is still a plug and play option but with some drawbacks.
1 you need a small gyro, one of the 9gram units about $60 or so
2 you need to put that gyro somewhere. On the back of the alieron servo, watch the CG
3 it is more expensive $35 plus the gyro vs $45
4 setup is more difficult, the cheap gyros assume a servo and have some creep in head hold until subtrim is set for center. I figure that you can set up a servo and then plug set the subtrim and plug in the rudder.

I'm currently waiting on a used EFlite 3-in-1 I bought for $20 as an experiment. Besides keeping the ESky 4-in-1 completely stock, the EFlite electronics will work with 3s lipos. I'd like to have "one battery pack to rule them all" so if I can get all my birds standardized on 3s1p lipos, even if it costs a few bucks up front will pay off greatly down the road.
If I were going to move up to a FP bird with all separate electronics I'd build the re-released Compy 300 FP BD from aero-fever.net as it's a belt driven tail which would give added tail authority compared to the HBFP.
What I'd really like is a 400 - 450 sized FP bird for relaxing flying with a bird that can handle a breeze stronger than the ones generated by mosquito farts.
I've run my HPFP with stock electronics and have used 3s1p 11.1v batteries regularly without any immediate side effects (except much more power from the motor).

I converted my HF FP to DX7 & AR6100 rx today. Two small servo leads made up (5cm long) and I was up and running. Simply removed the rx part of the mixer and mounted the AR6100 in its place. I'll place photos tomorrow if anyone is interested.

I went the route of using an AR6000, E-F Blade CPP 3-in-1 and DX7. (CRM: the AR6000 Also works with the DX6i and DX7)
Setup was simple. The DX7 will fly the HBFP in either heli or acro mode. You'll need to reverse the rudder and aileron on the TX.
If you use heli mode you'll need to leave the swash type set to '1 servo'. I also set my TX up to keep the throttle off until I switch it on (for safety reasons)
If you go with the separate 3-in-1 make sure the tail motor is turning the correct direction when you throttle up. If not turn the tail motor plug over in the 3n1.
Here's a couple of pics.

I put an e-sky 3-in-1 with a spektrum ar6100e in mine and fly it with the dx6i all of my helis use the dx6i now. LOVE it!

YES!
Please post how you removed the RX from the 4-in-1 if you would?
OK, I think I got the RX removed from the Esky 4-in-1 controller. Pretty simple, just undo the screws and pull the two halves apart.
Now, if I install the Futaba R617FS RX and connect the servos, is the TX going to recognize how to control the tail motor or do I need to program something for rudder channel in the TX?

You should not have to do anything 'programming' wise providing all is connected correctly. It is conceivable you may have to reverse a channel or two though.
The HBFP is litterally 'stupid simple'. All the mixing is done in the now 3-in-1 (was 4-in-1).

Well mines a Freestyle and its got a DX6200 installed.
but I am using separates for the Freep..
CC10A
DX6200
ARC130
TB HH Gyro.
Works like a champ.
