Hey all,
As I've stated before, I just got my first Nitro...a Raptor 50 V2. It is already setup for 3D mechanically. Previously to this, I only fly my TREX 450 SE v2 so I have zero experience with nitro. I was told by a guy at my LHS that I need to keep a much lower headspeed than my TREX...it should be no more than 2400 is what he said. I was also told on here and other forums that I don't NEED a governor (but it makes it easier) that I can use my throttle curves to lower the headspeed. I know that to be true, but for the raptor running an OS 50 Hyper and most likely I'll use 30% fuel for now, what would be a good idle 1 throttle curve to keepl the headspeed sane?
On my rex I use 100, 95, 90, 95, 100 but I'm sure that's too much yes?
Also, I have a standard glow igniter from my airplanes....it's pretty short and it looks like it will be tough to use, but for now is it doable? Eventually I'll prob. get an Align 2in1.
Lastly, if I mix my fuel (30% and 12%) like I've seen recommended, I assume I'd have to retune the engine?
Thanks all....looking forward to flying this heli!

Definatley will have lower curves with a 50 nitro. try. 100 75 50 38-40- 50 75 100. The 50 value is basically the number you will change to raise or lower your headspeed. Then adjust the others to keep it linear. Use the middle point. stop overspeeding at 0 deg. Easy to check listen for overspeeding at the top of a loop. Also a optical tach is a great investment.

With a governer you will still need working throttle curves in case of a gov failure or you throw a magnet. Beware of the Align 2in1 the reliability of those things is questionable at best. I had two bad units, one three flights old the other bad brand new out of the box.

I use that mix, and don't recall having to retune for the first tankful...i might have leaned it out a coupla clicks later on, just because there was a lot of smoke to play with (engine temp easily passes the 5-sec test on the backplate)...performance-wise, the mix is as good as when i was running straight 30%...ken

You asked about the glow igniter. Because the canopy gets in the way and such. I use a glow extender bolted to a bolt on the motor mount. Here is the one I use and it works great http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=803477 I've had a few different kinda over the years but this one seems to work the best. Only thing to watch out for with any glow extender, if you don't get good contact, there may be to much locktight on the bolt you mounted this to, and make sure the other end only touches the middle post on the glow plug or you will be shorting it out. It wont do any damage, the heli just won't start.
just recently i started using my idle ups and when i asked people they said get a governor and they were right
i use the GV-1 and its absolutely great, i use the 5 min epoxy to mount my magnet and iv had about 50 flights and still havn't lost a magnet, iv got a back up throttle curve but its jsut something simple so i can fly
and for the extended glow, i got one at my LHS which just got me stuck using it, i believe its kyosho and it is terribly annoying to get on and off but its reliable.

Since when? There are thousands of these units being used on here alone, there is no problem with them, sure things fail from time to time but thats a way over the top comment.

Epoxy is fine, the trick is to drill a very small hole all the way through the fan so that there is no air bubble under the magnet. Then if you ever need the magnet out a small punch will usually get it right out.
