so i broke down and ordered this http://www.readyheli.com/Custom_Heli_Parts_Hurricane_550_Carbon_Fiber_Frame _p/chp-nmh550.htm due to being sick of not being able to balance out bigger packs. are there any other parts i'll need to get? it comes with the bearing blocks and stuff, but don't want any surprises. can someone tell me what to expect, is there anything else i need to get?

do you have the 9650 servos to put in teh frame? that's what it was designed for....

Apart from having 9650s (or equivilently sized servos) I would suggest you get 1 or 2 extra packs of landing gear mounts:

http://www.readyheli.com/Custom_Heli_Parts_Gaui_550_Landing_Gear_Mount_p/chp-gfr003.htm

The frame is very solid but if you pound it most likely the gear mounts will snap-off. I also suggest that you zip-tie or use velcro straps around your gear and frame just in case. I had a bad vibe that developed in my hurry (no fault of the frame) but it caused the gear mounts to shake loose and my gear dropped-off from the frame! I don't know how I did it but I hit throttle hold about 4 feet from the ground and tried to set her down as straight as possible -- no damage!

Also, when you mount the gear to the mounts, make sure you don't over-torque the screws -- just snug them up. if you see the gear mounts are bowing downwards towards your gear then you probably have them too tight...

My only gripe about the frame is that I wish it had break-away canopy mounts. I'm afraid it might snap the frame half if you hit the mount in a side crash. You might want to ditch the crappy soft aluminum Gaui canopy mounts and get some Trex 600 plastic mounts instead (which you can cut-down to length). Hopefully the plastic mount will go before the frame snaps in a crash:

is there a reason you have to use the 9650's? my guess is that full size servos won't fit? i was kinda figureing something like that would happen. i can buy some if i can't wedge full size servos in. that's one of the reasons i love the hurri, it utilizes standard size servos.

Or maybe modding one of these:

http://www.readyheli.com/RC_Booya_Trex_600_Nitro_Canopy_Mount_V2_p/ncm.htm

I might try that out actually. I think you just need to mod the lengths but nothing you can't do with a dremel and a file...

The problem is the direct-to-swash mounting bracket in the frame. There is a v-shaped piece that sits just behind the main shaft and the two "wings" of the V come out around the the mainshaft to support your aileron/pitch servos. These mounts are sized for 9650 servos and I can't see how you could mod them to fit standard sized servos. For the elevator servo you might be able to use a standard-sized servo but you'll have to dremel the frame side to expand the opening. I'd just buy some 9650s and use the other servos for you next bird...

moot point now anyhow, as i just ordered 3 s9650's. $150! ouch!

Also get some replacement gear sets for the 9650s. They strip very easily unfortuneately (no metal gears) -- especially if you don't hit throttle hold in a crash. Of course, not crashing would be a good idea as well! :)

Hi!
I also like that frame! Looks really cool, especially the battery mount.
About the 9650s... they cost 79 Euros here in Austria which is 125$ :)

You will need an anti-rotation bracket.the custom heli frameset does not provide one.

can i use the anti-rot bracket that comes on the cnc head? i don't need a special one, do i?

$125 each? that sucks. i got three of them for $148.

Yes, same anti-rotation bracket. You should be good to go!

You will like the frame its well designed. Even with a short tail kit no CG problems.

You should add the motor mount, and washers for the screws holding the frame together. I didn't use washers and now I'm going to have to cut slots in the heads to get them off (they are a bit on the soft side)!

add what motor mount? not use stock you mean? ok, i understand washers on the frame screws, but wtf are you talking about on the motor mount? get a different one?

Same motor mount no worries. Don't know about the washers -- my kit came with hard steel round head allen screws and I used them without washers no problem. It won't hurt anything if you want the bling but I don't want the extra weight...

Yes... each... but VStabi isn't that expensive :)
Any practical experiences with this frame? I heard because of the high cg, reactions are much more direct.

The kit doesn't come with the motor mount, so unless you are recycling your old one you will need to buy another. The washers are because you will have a really hard time pulling the frame apart once it is assembled without them. If they are supplying better screws now then great, but I would still use washers under the hex screws.

two more questions before i can call this upgrade complete. what did you guys mount your canopy bolts with? i can thread them through the cf frame, but they won't snug up. i can't seem to find a nut with that thread, either.

I used stock plastic Trex 600 canopy mounts -- the Gaui ones suck. I threaded them thru the frame (screw/washer on the inside). All the hardware came with the Trex parts.

If you have access to a lathe the best thing to do is cut off the threaded part of the canopy post, drill and tap for M2 thread. Then you can put in spacers to make the post the right length and use a bolt from the inside of the frame.

just so happens that i do have access to a machine shop. i'll try that idea, and if for some reason that doesn't work, i'll get the trex 600 mounts.

save time and get the the Trex 600 mounts. They are plastic which is great as it wont harm the frame when the unexpected happens.

unexpected? in this hobby? hogwash!
