View Full Version : Partial Power Loss After Hover Is Established

I just got my Nexus 30 Standard out of mothballs and got it hovering again. (That's all I've ever done without crashing.)
I cleaned the OS .32 SX and now it starts well and it seemed to function properly. I have good power and can get into a hover easily.

However, I get a partial power loss after hovering 1-2 minutes? Slowly I lose power and the heli settles back to the ground slowly or will only hover in ground effect. Once it has settled, if I lower the throttle I get increased RPM as the pitch is decreased. If I let it idle 15-30 seconds it gets some of it's power back for a short period.

What is happening?

This sounds like a classic fuel flow, or pressure problem.
Have you replaced the clunk line, and all fuel lines yet?

Yep, Wayne's got it, clunk lines collapsing and causing the motor to go lean. I would pull the tank and replace all the lines. That will probably solve your problem.

LameBird and Hotshot Charlie, I haven't done that. I'll certainly replace those old fuel lines.

Another possibility is that your engine is getting overheated. Had the same problem with my old Hawk IV/Webra 32. I bought it used and that engine never ran right. After a minute of hovering the engine would bog down until it cooled then it would fly again. Good luck

I wonder if that is the problem. I haven't replaced the fuel lines yet, but I have the parts. If that doesn't fix it, overheating could be the problem. I've been flying in 90+ F heat.
What can I do to help cool it, besides forward flight? :?

The bad fuel lines will cause the leaning out, which causes overheating, which I would bet is your problem. It could be all related or it could be you just need to play with your tuning. Have fun and stay safe!

The engine is running lean.

lean = overheating.
hotter temps may require richer mixture, or higher nitro to internally cool the engine. A portion of engine cooling is via mechanical fan, the remainder is carried off with the unburnt oil. Synthetic oils carry some heat, but not as much as castor oil.

THAT was my problem. Now my Nexus runs just fine. I put 2 tank-fulls through it and I had no problem with power, until the tank started getting really low, then it lost a little power, but kept flying.

If you will add a "Header" tank, it will eliminate the problem when the fuel gets low in the main tank. Just quit flying when you get into the header tank.
