Okay, guys, after that whack on the head the other night, the visible damage was a broken blade and a bent blade-grip screw. The flybar was also inexplicably free -- like all the links had suddenly been oiled -- and at the 90° servo position both blades were at nearly full positive pitch, where moments before they'd been at correct neutral pitch. This mystery deepened when in reassembling things -- still at 90° servo position, 7mm level servo -- the blades were now at full negative pitch. So to level the blades I shortened the links, thinking "this is stupid; a crash didn't lengthen the links." Result? Now when I apply positive collective -- in which all three servos raise the swash -- the blade pitch goes negative. When I apply negative collective, the blade pitch goes positive. (All other servo inputs yield correct motion as before.) Transmitter settings have not changed. I've just spent an hour poring over this thing. To my unschooled eye, everything looks normal. Does anyone have a clue?

I think your blade grips are on backwards. There is a tiny hole on the grips near the base, and that should not be visible from the top. If it's on backwards the the pitches are backwards... look at the links to make sure they are not backwards after popping them on and off. Happened to me once after a crash, had it backwards and tried to lift off to test hover.... didn't go up when throttled up, so when I throttle down it was positive pitch, and heli jumped up... throttle hold in a split sec saved the heli that time, scared the crap outa me, got really lucky. So check your setup, and use reference pics to make sure grips and links are all on the right sides :)

Thanks, guys. Woke up in the night wondering if the blade grips were reversible, and sure enough.

The mechanic needs more adjustment than the heli.

Don't feel bad, I tried to fly my cp with the mixer arms reversed!

Reversing the blade grips though, was recently a hot topic on the Blade 400 board, who knows, but I don't think we should try it just yet...
