So what does Crabfu mean, anyway?
N3ClfxP2dPY
I made this silly animation several years ago... then I started messing around with hacking machines, especially small steam engines. Soon I started getting blogged and posted as crabfu, the steam robots guy. Which is just fine with me, since I have a really hard to spell / pronounce real name.
So it all started with this animation, crabfu means nothing but an exercise in multi legged animation :)

I race sailplanes, build x-comp aircraft, and fart with pc's.
But, I'm in with the rest of you. Crabfu's got momentum, talent, and *the right stuff*

Crab,
There is a steam powered heli in your future !! I can see it coming. Your stuff is really exceptional.

thanks, but I can't take credit for that battery mod... just copying the trex :)

such a modest person...its nothing like the trex mount.... its all Crabfu.

lol thanks... sorry man, didn't mean for this thread to turn into the crabfu show...
and steam heli... as soon as people find out that I fly helis too, it's the #1 response. But there is no way in hell that's going to happen lol.... helis aren't the safest hobby, steam is even be worse... combine the 2 together is just asking for trouble. Heard of steam explosions? drop a live steam boiler from 3 foot high and it's gonna be quite a show lol. Not to mention water is quite heavy, and engines are even more.... my most powerful engine is in the steam beetle, it weights over 20 lbs (empty), and has no where near enough power to lift off lol :)

I don't know, man; sounds like it's time for some SCALE. Looks like you could fit some steam gear into either of these two bad boys:

Steam powered helis's...
WELL....
Since I AM <one of> the resident agitators, AND an engineer, I say it's quite possible.
Look up the Stanley Steamer, and tube-fired boilers, flash steam is a good lead too.
With tubes in the firebox, the water will boil on demand, with faster heat transfer. The tubes add a high degree of safety, as there is less water and steam mass to "explode".
Nicrome wire wrapped around a about a hundred feet of coiled aluminum tube, and I'll bet you could get a 450 class bird to skyrocket! At least for a few seconds.
Add more batteries, and a high pressure pump to keep the tube supplied, and you might have, an admittedly doggie, but workable heli with short flight times.
Do I wanna try and build one?.... Heck, I'm still trying to find time to get the cyclic on my 200 set up, you think I'm crazy???

Cool :smokin:. What exactly are your robots designed to do?
Hopefully put a smile on your face :) None of my robots have a function, it's important to me that I'm not making anything useful, or for a purpose. To design and make something with a specific task in mind, I think would ruin the creativity and fun aspects of it for me :)
And free time.... yeah I'm currently outa work, so got some of that. Even when I don't have much of it, I do tinker a lot with stuff, it's just in my nature to get obsessed with something... same with helis :) You make time however you can, when it's something that is important to ya.... who needs sleep anyway?

ya, but where is the boiler on that thing?

Hollywood doesn't need boilers for steam engines to work, just lots of smoke and steam :)

No,
It did not turn into the Crabfu show, it just turns out that we think you come up with neat stuff.
I just add you to the list, 'bout ten-fifteen really interesting folks up here, way higher than the usual rate, I think that's rather interesting in itself.
But it's really cool when someone has a flair for engineering and art, (and nowdays) tech.
They have an italian word for that, I think it's like, de-winchi, or sumpthin.. ;-)
But regardless of all of this, you fly pretty good, so it's all on topic. Thanks for the fun we all had checking out yer cool stuff!

I'm no engineer, barely an artist, and working on becoming an average rc heli pilot... I just have an overblown imagination, and lucky enough to have an understanding girlfriend who puts up with my obsessions :) Now... if I can fly helis like I can imagine, szabo would be in trouble :)

p.s. I think the word that you were looking for is "Duh Wrenchy?"

fly heli's as often as you imagine, and you can fly like szabo, only, your income would go down, as well as alot of other things, i'm sure.

lol... I think it's safe to say that you either got it or don't, no matter how much I practice, I'll never be anywhere near the pros.... but I'm perfectly ok with struggling with the basics, it's the personal challenge that is appealing in the hobby, not the level :) One step at a time, doesn't really matter where we end up at!

i think all you'd have to do is apply yourself, and you could be a great pilot one day. but it takes alot of time to get good at it, and alot of taking your heli everywhere you go, and flying it as much as possible. i watched an interview with a pro he said he was running 10 to 15 packs a day through his. that's alot of practice. but the kids? i have no clue what it takes to teach a toddler how to fly a helicopter. there has to be a strange methodology to it. no one has ever answered me on how it's possible.
when i flew in the army, the more time i had at the controls, the more i gained confidence, and skill. just like with anything else.
of course, that's easier said then done, considering i still crash alot.:smokin:
