I have a stock H550 (plastic grips, woodies, etc) that needs a motor and esc. After seeing things like this:

I'd prefer to keep the head speed around 1900 as recommended on the wood blades. It'll be a long time before I do any 3D so that should be fine.
Can anyone recommend a motor & pinion to go along with the stock gearset to get the head to 1900?

From my research it seems the Z-20A motor plus 14 tooth pinion and stock gears should be enough? I ran the new Gaui 1100kv motor but it sucks, too inefficient and gets too hot. Just ordered my Z-20A

The Z20 -980 is a good motor...you might want to also order a 13t pinion in case the HS is too high with the 14t. You might be able to get it down with TC but it might fall out of the power band.
50A esc is plenty...
it would be a good set up and you have a little room to move up with it also.

Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to give the Z20A 980kv w/ 13t a try.

PS. Helidirect rocks. I ordered a motor yesterday afternoon, and it just got here 22 hours later (usps priority).

I just installed my new Z20A-980 yesterday and got a chance to get one flight (small circuits and hovering) in this morning. I got just over 6 minutes flight time on a pair of TP-2200, 25C's with the 14t pinion. Tomarrow I'll tach it at the field. With the Gaui stock motor, I was turning right at 1800 rpm. I did purchase the 13t pinion with the Z20A, but haven't tried it yet.
