Hey guys, Im in the process of making the decision for what type of starter drive and battery set up would be good for the finances as well as being the most effective for 600n. Any suggestions???? Thanks for your time...

If you are not going any larger than a 50 sized heli, one of the hobico or equivalent starters with a 3 cell 25C lipo will do wonders for you. The Maverick starter wand should be completely adequate too. IF you are considering going to a larger heli someday, then invest in a Dynatron with the Makita adapter. (Adapts the dynatron to the makita power tool batteries.) Also get a Sullivan starter wand. Bear in mind that these are only my opinions and your results may vary. LOL

Milwaukee 18V lithium-ion drill with a 6mm shaft gets the job done for me. Probably could use a little more RPM though but it successfully starts my engine 99% of the time. The other 1% is when I flood it:(

Buy cheap buy twice (or thrice) - I've just gone to the Dynatron having had little joy with the cheapie starters.

I went the cheap route. Just a standard Hobbico starter, and an old t-rex battery. It starts my 600n just fine.

Hi Stang,

If you're going to stick with the hobby, it pays to buy good starting equipment. Here's what I would recommend and use:

http://www.readyheli.com/S603_Sullivan_Dynatron_Super_Power_Starter_p/sulp1703.htm

http://www.readyheli.com/S613_Sullivan_6mm_Heli_Starter_Extension_p/sulp1613.htm

http://www.readyheli.com/Radio_South_Pro_Driver_MkIII_w_Charger_p/radp3110.htm

I also have the Sullivan power pack with charger for the Dynatron starter, but I wasn't able to find that power pack at any mail order retailers. I got mine from my LHS. It was about $29 for the pack and about $30 for the two RC car battery packs that it uses.

If you're looking for a fuel pump, I haven't found a good one. I bought the Slimline pump and jug fittings to start with. The fittings were nice, but the hand pump locked up in no time. I bought two Hobbico pumps to replace the one that went out (carrying one for a spare). They both went out in short order too. So now I'm using Dave Brown products Six Shooter with Holster. It's a simple, fool proof pump that can't break, but it takes a bit longer to fuel and de-fuel then I would like. It's just OK, but it's the best pump that I've had so far. I got it at my LHS.

I cringed when I spent the money for my starting equipment, but it's never failed me (except for the pumps). There's nothing worse than driving 15 miles to the field and not being able to start your engine.

Keep 'em flying.:YeaBaby:

Here are a few items for the field you may want down the road. The cost of the field box with all the goodies came to around $90.00 plus the cost of the starter and starter shaft. I bought a cheaper one and it works fine for a 50 size (600mm) don't try to start a 90 because it won't. That sullivan starter is the best and that was posted earlier, but you pay for it.

If you are running lipos in your 600N for your servo's ect get the dynamite Sentry tester, if not and are just using NiCads or NIMH then get the Hobbico. BUT please get one of them. Every time you fill up you should test your batteries as well. These testers simulate a load on the batteries that would be present with the servos working. That way you know for sure weather or not the battery has enough juice to power the servo's in an other flight. I have both. OH, I also keep a spare manual fuel pump in my box as well.

I'm doing something similar with a Hobbico 180 and a Ryobi 18V pack, cannibalizing the end off of a Ryobi flashlight I bought on eBay for the battery mount (thanks to jack726 for the idea). Even though I don't have the two attached together yet, I tried it this afternoon with them just wired together and it worked great.

35.00 Hobbico 180
12.00 KS&J Battery Holder
50.00 (2) 6 cell 3300mah NIMH packs (25.00 ea) - wired in series with harness
15.00 to 30.00 Starter extension

Easily good for a weekend of flying without re charging.
Totally portable, no need to hook it up to a flight box.

I use basically the same setup other then I have the hobbico 90 with a cheap raptor start shaft (without one way bearing,T600n has it in the clutch assembly). It starts my 600 and my ys140 4 stroke airplane engine with no problems. been using the same starter and batteries this way for over a year.

I just got the Torqmaster 180... So are most people attaching the starter wand directly to the starter shaft or using the rubber cone insert?

Are the threads reversed or normal on the shaft? I can't for the life of me loosen the bolt holding on the aluminum starter cone.

I'm using the insert. The starter is easier to pack in my field box that way.

Here are photos of my Torquemaster 180 modification:

Note the 18V Ryobi power source.
http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=48373&stc=1&d=1211057809

I used two 4" metal corner brackets and attached them to the starter using sheet metal screws.
http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=48374&stc=1&d=1211057809

I skeletonized a Ryobi One+ flashlight to make the battery holder, filled the open end with epoxy putty, drilled a couple of pilot holes into the epoxy, and attached the other ends of the corner brackets to the holder using sheet metal screws.
http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=48375&stc=1&d=1211057809

I also installed a Deans Ultra female connector in the battery holder and made a banana-to-Deans adapter encased in epoxy putty. I may redo this so that it has a bend in and doesn't straight stick out.
http://www.helifreak.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=48376&stc=1&d=1211057809

I thought about cutting off the protruding ends of the corner brackets, but they make a good shield against accidentally pushing the button. I may shorten the cable, but I didn't want to do that until the starter is out of warranty. I just hope Hobbico doesn't see me using 18V with a 12V starter.

I have a Minimax that works a treat.
Started a 90 with it, no worries!

Using an old 3S Align 2100 LiPo. I did Eagletree log the starter for the first few outing and saw nothing over 35Amps, generally to get the heli started it was about 7 amps. Battery is held on to the starter with very robust velcro.

Small enough to have in your pocket when you walk out to the flight line.

When the funds allow it I would love to get a slimline SL2000 fuel pump.
