According Miniature Aircraft homepages:
Overall tail rotor setup is more important when using plastic t/r gears. Very hard, abrupt tail rotor direction changes are not recommended without first applying the proper t/r setup:
When using the Futaba GY601, use of the "FAI" mode is recommended
It is recommended that you implement t/r delays. If you perform maneuvers with abrupt tail rotor direction changes, this will ease the stress on the t/r mechanism but have little effect on your maneuvers

- How many does use delay on there´s GY601?
- Anyone use it with the steelgears (Closed gearbox) ?

I use the delay in the 9Z on the rudder channel. I don't use the delay in the gyro menu on the 601.
I have the delay on the rudder channel in the 9Z set to about 50%. This works the same as the delay in the gyro menu. The delay in the gyro menu is there for radios other than the 9Z that might have a delay function in the radio software.

The one thing about using the delay in the Z tranny is that it paces the servo both as the stick is moved away from center AND on return of stick to center. The delays in the gyro amplifier split this function so that you can delay the return of stick to center (which is what is hard on the tail box and/or may cause an overshoot) while keeping the input speed of a rudder command the same.
