Hello. I am trying to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of nitro vs. electric power over a period of several years. Please see my post on the 600E forum.

Why does this come up a million times a week?
Pick one and like it.
Seriously who CARES how much $ it costs when it's spread out over several years? There will be more money spent on replacing broken or worn parts... Either way you're outlaying a fair amount of cash.
Sheesh, pick a different topic already.

this is seriously the 4th time this week i've seen this topic. please PLEASE search. either way most people are going to tell you that its up to you but both are great, and it just depends where you fly, if you can fly nitro, get a nitro, if you cant, then get an E. they both cost the same pretty much give or take 100 bucks.

Wow... the most caustic responses I have yet to receive on Helifreak. Sorry for offending the two of you.
This is my first post in this forum and yes, I should have searched first. My humble apologies to all who were PO-ed that I made this terrible mistake.

i have both. a 600n (hyper50 mp5) and a 600e HV (8s 1910/1y) and there both breat helis.
My observations :
nitro has less power. OS claims 1.9hp. manufactures ratings should be taken with a grain of salt
electric has been flight logged at 3.34 hp ! the E will punch holes in the sky at will, but the N will teach cyclic management.
nitro is messy , E is clean.
flight times (this is where a thought out decesion comes in) on my E are 4:40 and the N are 9:00
recharge times and pack costs VS extra flight gear to lug to site and a messy heli.
flights per trip to field : on the N an extra $40 rx pack will get me 4-5 more flights (up to 10 flights if i want !) on the E that can really add up. My 8s 3700 packs are about $440 each flight , if you wanted 6 flights per outing then your going to be digging deep unless you want to charge at the field. (these big packs will drain your car battery fast)
Myself i'm selling the E version (to fund 700) , but for me i always fly at the field , noise is not an issue , and the extra flight time is well worth the mess i have to clean up (no need to lube the tailshaft .. lol)
I miss the power of the E though , no denying that.
Best to have a look at you situation and where you plan on flying it , how many flights per day your interested in doing , and how muc gear you want to lug around.
Like what was mentioned above , costs are close. find out what youe willing to do and go from there.
If you decide on the 600e let me know , mine has all the metal bits, hv setup , under 50 flights , no crashes.
Martin :)

bry - im sorry for being harsh, but at the same time this topic comes up about 2-3 times a week. it is just hard to keep sane when people dont use the 'search' function. almost like it doesnt exist. honestly everyone has done it, but it does get aggravating after saying the same thing about 4 times a week. might as well start copy/pasting responses;)

So, if the same topics are being discussed why did you click on the topic and read what was being posted if it bugs you so much? Obviously you saw what it was about but still clicked on it to give some one a sarcastic response. Save it!

Well it's his first time on this forum so I think we can cut him a break ...... This time :P....
In answer to your question id go for the new Trex 600 nitro super pro, I have an electric Trex 500 and I love it maybe a little more than my nitro only because of how fast to get in the air and how clean it is after going flying.....
I looked at the 600e a while back, the minimum number of pack you would want is 3 specially if you go flying at a club so £200 a battery around $400 ( taking a guess please correct if wrong ) Thats about 12 gallons of fuel a battery...... I know which one id rather go with......
Also remember if you go electric you run the risk in a crash of buggering your pack, a crash with a nitro your not going to loose $400 worth of fuel... Just something to bear in mind....
Which ever one you feel suits you best..... One other thing nitro is a bit safer because of the clutch, you are able to hold the headstock while starting unlike electric where it is straight drive from the motor to the main gear and those electric motors don't give easily....
Hope this helps if you want any extra advice PM me I promise I won't bite ;)

OK, consider yourself corrected. :D
The cost is closer to $300, which is still not chump change.

Okay, well, thanks, guys for the info. I know how you feel about guys not searching before they post. I have felt that way myself in other forums in which I am considered "experienced". :) I promise that I will take it upon myself to do some searching before I post such a general question in the future. Deal? :P
I do appreciate the insights. I really like the simplicity and ease of electric, but those darn big packs for the 600 and 500 are SO pricey... I thought that packs for the TREX 450 were bad... NOT!
Now that I am a member of an RC club, I think that maybe Nitro is the way to go. I must admit that the smoke and smell DO have a certain appeal. ;)

That's assuming VAT and market pricing differences don't get you.

sure, BUT, keep in mind, that the price of batteries is also equivalent to that of the price of gas, so you spend about 300 dollars in gas, its pretty much time to buy a new battery if it was an electric, does that make sense? PERSONALLY i want a 600N, HOWEVER, flying areas for such a craft are few and far between in my area. if you have the place to go, get an N. they're just so much more bad ass in my opinion....

it's the same in the US. The more you make the less they lube you before the rectal exam I mean taxes :arggg:
In the US they just tax you different. In the end I think we end up paying similar tax rates. Cost of living you have us "beat" though as across the pond everything seems inflated due to anythign getting taxed everytime someone touches it.

Bry I have seen your videos with your 450 close calls. No not attempt them with a 600 you may not be so lucky. Whichever you choose you will be amazed how stable and responsive these larger birds are. You also need a
a good amount of space to fly them "not in a Pole Barn." Personally since you do not have alot of stick time I would go with the N so you can fuel and fly. You will get alot more practice with all the beginner things you need to learn....

I'm a huge advocate of having some stick time before you step to the 600s. You need to be fully confident in your flying skills before you take the leap in my opinion...

Sure the nitros aren't as clean as the electrics, but mine its not like its dripping with oil and takes 10 minutes to clean up. A couple minutes with a rag and some windex or something and all is good.
Either way, you really can't go wrong. Good luck with your choice!

LOL! :P Yeah, she tried to give me a haircut a while back, but I am flying outdoors at one of three large fields now and am making progress. I figure that I am going to wait until next year to build a 600. I'm going to take the remainder of this year to get better at general Heli flying skillz on my 450 V2.
And yes, I do appreciate the danger of these machines - especially a large nitro. I remember the news clip last year about the instructor who was almost decapitated by one of these large Helis...

Nitro you get a cool smell. Electrics when you get a smell its usually gonna cost you a few hundred.

Yeah, when you let the smoke out, not only does it stink, but you're out some dough!
I did like the smell of nitro in the morning... wait, wasn't that line in a movie in the past? Oh wait, sorry, that was NAPALM. :)
