View Full Version : SK360 Electronic Flybar setup and review

OK folks. Kevin and I worked on getting the SK360 setup and used his existing Trex500 flybarless heli.
In order for me to make setup videos I first need to know how to set it up and what parameters do what in the setup software. Thus I will first release test flights and with some comments about what we changed and tweaked.
Out of the box just the basic setup worked great! We had to dial down the Hiller gain a touch from 50% to get rid of a little wobble. After that it flew fine and pretty standard. Slightly faster than a flybar version and very locked in feeling. We did not shoot that video as Kevin wanted it to be a little faster. So all we did was increase control gains from 180 to 230.
Here is that flight test video
Video Link ->First Flight Test (30 Megs) (http://video.helifreak.com/?subpath=finless/sk360&filename=360ftest1.wmv)
Then we wanted to see if we could get it tweaked even more and make it crazy fast like Kevin likes the 500 with his V-stabi. We increased control gain to 280, lowered dampening gain 2 clicks, and increased hiller gain a touch. This video shows how darn fast you can make this thing work. We still had a little high speed shake (crack ;) ) so some more tweaking is needed but we are getting there.
Here is that flight test video

Alas Kevin had a crash so testing stopped.
Stay Tuned.....Expect more to come SOON along with full install, setup, and head layout videos!

Thanks Bob!
Looking forward to a setup video.
Would also be nice to have a video showing a T-Rex 450 head conversion :D

jeez already upgrading to the flybarless? you JUST got those paddles on! lol.

The only thing better than Axe CP flybar paddles on a T-Rex 450 is no flybar at all :P
Yupp, I got a SK360 on order :D

Looks pretty awesome - couldn't believe those axial flips :)

Is there any way for you to do a test with it on a multi blade head for scale use?

Awesome!
As one of the early adoptors' of the SK360, the hardest element to grasp is how to troubleshoot electronic setup issues. Oscillations, pitching, wobbling, drifting, phasing, and on and on and on. Then you have Bell Gain, Hillier Gain, Dampening Gain, Hillier Decay, Pots on the Gyro and the Advanced Tab settings and the ratio between them, and on, and on...
If I could make a suggestion, I think the video's should focus on resolution of problems and explanations of how to fix them. Show a video's of 1. Hillier decay at 0 and 100%. 2. Hillier too high. 3. Bell too high. 4. Bell Hillier ratio too close. 5. Bell Hiller ratio to far apart. 6. Dampening gain to low/high. 7. Swash mixing to high, low. 8. Throw a set of unbalanced blades on and see if you can induce vibration problems. 9. Test the vibration filter and see what the effect it... And any other one's people can think of.
These could all be put in 1 or 2 videos with the different sequences edited together. This is no easy task and I can be little help from Michigan,
Understanding what's not right and how to adjust it is the key to getting luring mass appeal to this huge leap forward in RC technology (based on price and capability). And, of course, mass consumption = lower prices. :noteworthy
Hopefully the aftermarket guys are on to this technology and we get lots of flybarless head options with the proper geometry for direct swash to blade grip links!!!
OHHHHHH, and how I would love a set of Titanium turnbuckles (from swash to grip) for dead nuts adjustment of blade tracking... I get goose bumps thinking about +/- a 1/4 turn for length adjustment...

Yikes... that is a LOT or work man... Let me get through the setup vids and we can go from there.

I know!!! That might need to be a Pay-Per-View event. Finless Bob's SK360 Smackdown, Lord of the 2-axis gyro XXXVVIII. :whip
Seriously, if I get my brain around all of this, I would be willing to send you some footage that you could use, provided it's up to your impeccable standards of course.

That can sure work! I have no problem using others videos or images.... Like you said though.. I too must get my head around this! So much to learn and fool with settings wise.
Next step for me is getting my own heli setup so I can start messing with settings and see exactly what they do. Using Kevin's heli was fine but I don't think he will want to stay the "test heli" through all of this.

I'll be watching this thread closely! I would love to jump on this technology, but I am not as much of a pioneer as my friend, lbcynya. I think I'll wait until you guys get it sorted out a bit more before I leap. :)
Being as that I know lbcynya personally, I might be able to assist him in the video taping. I have a bit of experience with this and should be able to produce something that will meet your standards, Bob.

That's an excellent idea wrt vid - I have had in mind to do one for tail gyro probs for a while, hunting, oscillation, twitch but gee dealing with 3 gyros gonna be a big task !

Sounds like too much work for a new guy like me, I'll stick to the flybar....

Sounds good to me :)
I like to fiddle with this kind of stuff. Sure would like to experiment with the sk360. That should keep me occupied for a while. Considering to go flybar less on my new trex-600. But I want to buy a spare lipo pack first :YeaBaby:...O well, life is about prorities.
I'm watching Bob :)

is there less damage to the head after a crash with a flybarless set up?

Less parts means less damage so yes.

A big plus already without testing the device....after a crash you won’t have the "Why the H.. is this flybar not coming out of this head."
Because it needs to be "more or less straight" for flying, but perfectly straight to get it out of the head :arggg:
Bob,
I assume you are going to finish the phazor build first?

Waiting for the new code update from Skookom. We had issues on the Trex500 due to noise and possibly vibration. Once I get the new code I will start testing again.
But I am a HECK of a lot more comfortable with setup stuff now and understanding what things do. Bare with and videos will be coming. Just need some more time.
