Well intersting if you are a 550 "anorak" like me :):)

I recently bought a second 550 kit from Fung (excellent service as ever) - standard plastic frames + Z20A + Spektrum 821's + Gaui gyro + short boom etc. and there are some interesting changes. To date I have noticed (versus my old summer 2007 kit)

Hollow main shaft
CNC anti-rotation bracket
little servo plates to use HS-81 size servos
20 tooth OWB
50 tooth primary gear

These are all in a standard kit - also the head is put together much better - all links are much freer and moves very smoothly out of the box - I will strip it down to check screws etc. but so far very happy.

Mike.

Hmmm... does this mean that all kits from flying-hobby will ahve the shorter boom and hollow main... and if they all have a 20T OWB that's great... but the 50T primary... then that's going to mess up the headspeed calcs a bit...

Sorry - I added the shorter boom as an extra - it comes with the longer boom. The 50 primary is great for me as I have the Z20A 980 and wanted to run with the woodies - I had actually bought some 50's to swap it over (I want to keep below 2,000 HS as I have plastic main blade grips)

And also has CNC swash - been over the head - much better than the previous kit, all links nice and precise but not too tight and plenty of thread on the self-tappers (I still replaced them with hex-head machine bolts but that's just me being over-picky).

what is the gearing you have now?
1st:
main:
OWB:
Pinion:

I'm 3 weeks away from ordering my hurri and will need to make sure I get the gearing right.

I am going for Z20A 980kV with 14 tooth pinion, 50 T primary and 20T OWB -should give me about 1,800 HS at 90% efficiency

Anyone knows the part number for hollow main mast?

you know... this sounds just like the Hurri 550 SFD that readyheli is selling now.. except they list theirs as a 60T front main gear... Hmmm

Is that the new "Type B" frp canopy? How does it stack up compared to the plastic and the painted fibreglass ones?

what is the benefit to running a hollow main shaft...wouldnt this make it weaker...

mysticmead

less weight and yes, it's weaker. I really don't think the amount of weight saved is worth the trade off in strength. if mine comes with a hollow main shaft I'll replace it with a solid one... after I bend it of course.

Guys,

I really wouldn't worry about the strength of the hollow shaft - it's an 8mm shaft - free heli (JB's) to anyone that can bend that without doing significant other damage

I crashed the z20 hurri when it was inverted (doing the mowing the lawn trick) in S2 mode and it bent the (bedarngeepers) outta the solid main shaft. The other damage was the flybar (which was so mangled i had to cut it with a dremel to get it out), one L-30 link, feathering shaft, two ball link ends, dent in the boom, one carbon rcp blade, one tail blade.. that's it. Not too bad really for how it went down. I'm glad i had the solid shaft and not a hollow one or I'm sure the damage would have been much worse.. it might have even trashed those pricey main blade grips. The solid shafts are heavy and I was amazed at how it was bent. It must take some incredible force to do that. Anyway, I replaced it with another solid shaft, but noticed that my other solid spare main shaft packs are different colors. Two of the shafts are black and one is silver. Does anyone have any idea what the deal is with that?

have you had a chance to try out the Gaui Gyro yet? I'd really like to know how it performs.

Sorry - not yet, about half built.

Another interesting find though - short boom, which is goos as I was going to cut the longer one down anyway. And the link lengths are much better as are the self-tappers that are proper lengths - all of the little niggles seem to be fixed.

Oh, it is the latest Fibre Glass canopy as well :banana:banana

ok, I was just curious as to how that Gyro works. if it's not a bad gyro, then I could save a little $$ and not have Fung swap it for a 2100T

The only problem is that it didn't come with any instructions and I can't find any on-line

here's a post that a freak had good results from the Gaui gyro on his 100
http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.php?p=654778&postcount=14

I would guess that it sets up just like a 401.. at least based on the pics of it, it looks like a 401 only shorter.

Teah - I saw that, sounds promising

Maidened the 550 briefly this morning - just trimming and tuning down my controls - still needs a bit more work sorting out the servo tuning - it's a bit "drifty" at the moment (can't find the exact spot that relates to straight ahead), I may just need a bit more gain.

Managed to get another quick flight in this evening - it's better now, kept upping the gyro gain until I got to 150% (DX7) without wag so I probably need to put a larger arm on. Holding better though :)

150% (DX7)

 Didn't know it would go that high...I run about 68% on my 401 with 515 blades....

Doesn't that sound awful high? 150% ?
