Hi there.
Has anyone got a link for information or a manual on how to tune a new TT50 motor. I am building a 50v2, never had a heli before and never started one. The manual for the motor seems OK but is there any additional information out there that i should be aware of, also any carburetor mods. What temperature should the head be at as i want this motor to purr like a sewing machine.
Thanks Guys:smokin::hug::cheers

Ooops, sorry to mention it is a pro motor,, i was looking at a thread @ runryder after googling for a carburetor mod, and a post appeared where someone filed down the needle and this apparently made the engine more stable. have u heard if this modification has been worthwhile. Thanks for your response

Greg,
I have a TT46Pro in one of my Raptors. Bought it cheap over 2 years ago and everyone said it was crap due to carburation problems. First time out, I had problems with the mid range - the engine would cut out because the transition was too severe on the needle. I did the needle mod on it - took about 5 minutes in a power drill and nobody believes how well the engine has run since. I have had it for two years and only replaced one piston and liner recently. Just put a new lease of life into it by fitting a Funtech HN50 TE3D pipe on it. It will never have the power of newer engines but it flies my 2nd Raptor perfectly for F3C style aerobatics and the fuel consumption and most importantly the reliability are 2nd to none. Never had a flame out in 2 years of weekly flying.
So, to answer your question - yes the needle mod works fantastic (in my limited experience)
I had a used Raptor 50 with the TT50 that was supposed to be such a dog to tune. Ifound it tuneable and quite useable since all I was doing was hovering and manuevering it around in slow to moderate flight.
The thing that gets people in trouble with this engine is the idle(slow speed) screw does a LOT more than just idle. It provides a substantial amount of fuel to the engine at hover power. Becuase of this you must tune it to run at the right temp in hover using the idle screwe and not so much the high speed screw.
The result is that at idle speed the engine runs quite rich and at least in my case tended to load up and quit after a minute or do. But the engine ran for fine for me for over 5 gallons of fuel and never let me down in flight.
I recently destroyed it when the throttle linkage came loose from the carb shaft. The round thimble like barrel with the arm on it fell off when the nut backed off. This cause the engine to go to full power. I landed in one piece and the engine and rotor blades just sat on the ground and screamed. Eventually the engine died. Glo plug had turned blue from heat. Piston had almost melted a hole in it. Glo plug filament fell out of glo plug and got caught between piston and cylinder wall and scored the wall and the piston, jammed the ring in the groove.
Now have an OS 50 Hyper. It does tune much better, idles sweet, lots of power. But the 50 TT will work if you take the time to understand how to tune it.

thanks for the responses guys. i e-mailed michael from raptor technique, this was his response.
Hi Greg, thanks for the compliment on my website! As for the TT50 needle mod, I nor any of the others at my field have needed to do this. I have adjusted a lot of TT50s around here and I just do not have the idle problem mentioned on the forum. The only thing I can figure is they maybe using 30% nitro fuel. It contain more oil and this could result in a rougher idle. Around here we all use 15% fuel and OS #8 plugs. The TT50's around here run great... and the TT53 (Redline) that three of us have are great as well.
It seems that the correct ratio of nitro and the correct glowplug and understanding on how you tune your motor will give you far less problems. In regards to the redlines i asked michael if he can provide information on tuning redlines on his web site. As in Australia, some people hate them while some love them, which shows that the peoplr who luv them must understand the motor completley.
