I have just needed to change my dampeners. I had to put the feathering shaft in the vice to undo one of screws to regrease the thrust bearing. Is it ok to re use the shaft after being in a vice? Its not bent but I wondered if vicing them would damage them?

As long as you didn't bend it I would have to say it's fine. Next time you can't get a bolt free try and heat it up with your Soldering Iron to free up the locktite. Remember a little Locktite will do the trick when reassembling.

if you put any marks on the spindle, its could be worthless. you'll cut your dampers when u re-install it, if the marks are in the bearing seat area's, you'll have a hard time installing it, and when you do it will probly seize itself into the beargins, which could cause the inner race to distort which can cause the bearings to freeze up.

if you were just changing dampners, then you shouldn't have to remove both screws...just take one blade grip off and slide out the feathering shaft with the other grip.

If you have to hold the shaft with grips hold it dead centre where it can't cause any of the problems above - unless you have facing plates on the vice ( or the sleeve on) you will damage the shaft otherwise
