View Full Version : What size receiver pack?

I am currently using a 1000mah pack and it is really small and light, but after about 3 or so flights the BEC goes into the red warning lights. Should I get a slightly larger pack, say 1300 mah or just two 1000mah and change them over at the field? I like the 1000 because it is nice and light and does not interfere with balance to much.

(BTW, this is my first time using a bec and RX pack)

What are others using?

Thanks.

I'm using the1500mAh JR RX packs running directly to the AR9000 RX on my z20 heli as I don't need to change voltage for any reason. They are good for 25 to 30 mins of flight running a 401 and 4 digital servos. I don't push them more than that, but could. They don't fit in the belly of the plastic frame flat like the stock pack, but they do at an angle and it's no problem. I just fasten mine in with a wide velcro band and it holds them well in all orientations. The 1500mAh pack was only $12 at my local HS and I picked up another for only $7. Now I have 3 packs total and that is plenty of flying time in a day if I only wanted to fly the z20 bird.

My z30 heli uses a cc bec and it is more convenient not having to charge an RX pack, but on this heli i don't like that it sponges a little off the main packs. I guess it's all personal preference.

I stopped using the Rx pack and use a real BEC instead (the Gaui one doesn't really a BEC as you still have a B, so it's more of a B-non-EC)

I use a SportBEC from Dimension http://www.dimensionengineering.com/SportBEC.htm

Cheers,
Mike.

You didn't say how much flying time you get.....

I went to TP 1300 pack....and can fly through a 2200, two 2500, and two 3300 sets of packs and usually see on lightgo out, rarely two, I have the 1000 pack for a back up.

I get about 30 - 35 of actual flight time. I like the rx pack as it doesn't use any power from the main batteries and if anything shouldgo wrong I still have radio control..(maybe)

Some say just one more thing to go wrong....I'm going to stick with it for a while...

I really like being able to power-up the servos, make adjustments without having to worry about the motor spinning up.

Those times sound right on to me Mjdee14. I've got a setup both ways and both have been fine. Control of the heli if the main pack fails is a plus and so is the weight that you can distribute to counter balance the heavier packs. Without the RX pack, no charging worry and no extra weight. Guess it's kind of a toss up. I see no advantage either way, just a difference. Again, personal preference to me.

I totally agree

Thanks guys. For now I enjoy the seperate pack, esp that I can tweak the heli without having to unplug the motor, so I find that I will adress minor adjustments more readily. The 1300 TP packs sounds about right and with the 1000 spare I should be good. BTW the most I am getting ITO flight times is about 20 min. (analogue servos on cyclic and 9254 on the tail, LTG 2100T gyro, AR 7000 RX)

I'm using a FP 1350 2S receiver pack running an 8V system with a Spektrum step-down for the Gyro and the TR servo. Servos are 8717 on the cyclic (crazy fast) and and 8900G on the TR. I can get 4 6:00 minute flights and I have to put about 1000mAh back in the receiver pack. Might get another receiver pack, but I will wait until I have more than 2 sets of batteries first.

My receiver pack weighs almost nothing and I can fly it days on end, it is a Medusa BEC.:YeaBaby:

I use a tp 1300 and get about 5 or so flights, for the extra weight I will never use a BEC on a heli this size! I have had some packs fail and lost a heli, so now i always use a rx pack. now That I am using the A123 packs I really don't feel it's safe to use a BEC. the A123's work great but I have had some cells come loose. in all my years of flying I have never had any "small" lipo fail 700-1500mah. but I have had A123 tabs come off, and puffed several 2000+mah packs. so for me it's a saftey issue.

another vote for the sport bec. i don't use that particular bec on my hurri, but i've got one on my t-28 trojan and it's really nice. you can select whether the servos get 5v or 6v. i'm just using an align 3amp regulator for my rx, servos and gyro which makes me have to use a 2cell lipo pack. i thinks i'll be getting another sportbec so i can shave some weight.

Well, I originally use a separate pack but the hassle of checking two packs is a pain. safety? its about the same, if you only loose the rx pack you may have a heli that might be at full power flying somewhere uncontrolled instead just dropping from the sky, some ESC will drop throttle with no signal from throttle.
