A note to all out there. Last Thursday was one of the worst days of my life. My 22month old Border Collie named Bear bit my 600 while on the ground when I had just flicked it to idle up. I know what some of you are thinking, that i'm a dick for letting my dog around it while i'm flyin. Bear has been bought up with Heli's both rc and the real one's since he was born as i've flown the real thing for a living for the last 18 years. He is one of the best trained dogs i've ever meet and has always stayed clear of them. On Thursday something possesed him to bite it. It sliced through the top of his mouth between his lip and his nose to his upper jaw which ripped about 2cm of one Radix blade and then the jagged edge hit him again on his lower jaw knocking out three of his big k9s and splitting the other in half. It theen proceeded to rip his lower jaw apart. We live 3 hours from the vet so he was flown by heli to her with me tryin to hold his face together. I'm only writing this to worn others no matter how good your dog is keep them locked up while flyin. I know I should never of allowed this to happen and feel pretty shit about the whole thing so please you don't need to tell me "What where you thinking etc" Just wanted to let people out there know to never trust your pets no matter how good they are it took Bear 20 months before he tried.

There is no need to flame, he could have said nothing. Fun, Learning, Friendship and Mutual Respect.
My wife had a white German shepherd when I first got with her. One day out of the blue when I was mowing the yard she attacked our lawnmower and bit me and Robin both. I had mowed the yard hundreds of times before. This one time the dog snapped and it was a bad situation.
Lets all learn from this please, no flames necessary.
I am very sorry to hear that your dog was hurt.

Dog's can be very unpredictable so it's not your fault...... My friend was bitten by his own dog that he had been brought up around, for no reason at all..... Hope Bear recovers soon

WOW, that is horrible. My Girlfriend and I are major Pet Lovers, and that really hurts to hear. Dogs can be funny sometimes, along with Cats. You think they want anything to do with what you are doing, then out of no where, they do.
I feel really bad for you man. Very sorry to hear about that. And I hope he will be ok in the coming days. Please update us on his condition.
Again, sorry to hear about this.

Awe man that really sucks bad. I couldn't imagine what it would have felt like to watch that happen. My condolences to you and your dog.
I really don't think anyone here has the nerve to flame you.

Jaymango,
I'm awful sorry to hear about Bear. We all know that things happen. Always have, always will.
I find it very admirable of you to share this considering the circumstances and opening yourself to criticism (which would be uncalled for IMHO). I'm not sure I would have shared such a personal event. Now I know that I would. It serves as a reminder to us all that there is no price on safety.
I hope your buddy recovers well.
Sincerely,
Jeff

He is doing as well as can be expected. Lots of stiches etc. He has no front teeth but i will be gettin him false implants as soon as he is well enough. He is pretty depressed as he was always full of life and now is just laid up. I live in Fox Glacier.

That is just awful! Both for the dog and you. :(
Accidents happen just when you least expect them. And as always, they are preventable 'after the fact'. Yours may prevent someone else from sharing the same fate.
I hope the dog recovers his "pep". And I bet he never tries that again!

I commend you on your ability to share this tragic event with us, also your ability to airlift your buddy to help.
This happens more often that we would like. Not always to pets but children as well. I'm thinking of farm accidents and the like. It's very easy if not unavoidable to treat our pets like they are our kids. Having said that, this is a good reminder that they are not and can do things like this at random I include small children as well in this statement.
I'm truly glad to hear that he is alive if not kicking yet. He's getting a new set of choppers to boot. ( pun intended )

Thanks for having the courage to share this info so that others can learn from your experience. I will never forget this story and if I see someone with a pet at the flying field I will make sure to caution them to restrain there pet while at the field.
Best wishes for a full recovery.

Sorry to hear about this, also. Borders are smart dogs, so I'm sure he had some reason. Remember, they can hear things we can't. Maybe you have a bearing going bad in the heli, which made an aweful sound to him, causing him to want to turn it off, somehow?

I am so sorry about your dog, Bear. I almost had the same thing happen to me about two weeks ago at the club field. This was not a dog, but a 3 year old kid!! The kid got away from his mother and ran right to my helicopter as I was landing. If it was not for my spotter, this could have been a bad day!! He yell climb and I did with no question ask. Like I tell everyone at my club, always fly with a second pair of eyes. A pet is a member of the family and we love them just as if they were people!! Thank you for sharing your pain and I will pray for Bear to get will soon!! Please give us update on Bear!!!

Damn, That's a hard lesson learned.
It's like they say, Hind sight is always 20-20.
Hope he will be ok. Are they going to be able to fix his jaw?

Jason, that's such an awful thing to happen. my great dane got out of my yard one day, got hit by a bus trying to cross Great North Rd and wound up hiding in the bush for three days before we found her. By the end of three days we honestly thought we were hunting for a corpse. She had a broken jaw and a lot of bad cuts and gashes, all infected after three days in the bush of course, a lot of operations and about $15k worth of vet bills later she is happy and healthy again and apart from a slight limp when she's tired and some furless patches she is back to normal.
When she came home from the emergency vets she was pretty depressed for weeks, but as time went by she got better and better. I just wanted to tell you this so that you know that Bear can pull through almost anything as long as you love him and look after him.
Please keep us up to date on Bear's progress as it's really heartbreaking to hear this story.
