I'm just wanting to do a little planning ahead sense I'm only doing noob mild 3d if it can even be called that lol.

I have the 550 standard version, plastic frames and head assembly and was wondering what important upgrades are for a hard 3d setup. Here's my current setup

Z20 980 KV motor
S3152 servos for cyclic
LTG2100T with LTS6100G for tail control
Everything else is stock except for revco gears
3s1p 2200 Air Thunder batteries for power ( probably going to have to upgrade this as noticed flight times went from 6-7 minutes to about 3-4 when flipping it around )

. I know I'm going to have to get carbon blades and metal grips but is there anything else that needs to be upgraded? or would I be better o using this one as a trainer and just getting another heli setup for hard 3d ?

For hard 3D, try Z30 motor and if you want more than 3 minutes get 3300mah lipos with 20C+ rating.

metal grips, metal elv arm, carbon blades. upgrade the motor to something over 1000kv, and of course better batteries of 25c. and 2500mah or larger.

Guai upgrade motor or Z30 1110kV, Upgrade the tail. TRex 600 TR hub and grips is a inexpensive way to go. Lightweight paddles. 25-30C 3000+mAh batts. 20T OWB

The CNC blade grips are going to be hard to come by right now. I have everything CNC on the head except the blade grips and the see-saw. I also added the TRex 600 TR hub and grips, which stopped the problems I had with tail locks. I have the 1100Kv/1500W upgrade motor, with a 20T pinion, 20T OWB, RevCo gears, FP 3200 30C batts and 500mm woodies. I get about 6:00 minutes of mild 3D, aerobatics and :smokin: figure 8s turning 2200+. I'll probably get CF blades (500-515mm) in the near future. (And also a 3rd set of batts)

I wonder if those are the original CNC grips. I believe they had to be heated to get the bearings to come out. They had the thrust washer in the center that generally needed to be lubed too. ReadyHeli (the importer) hasn't had the grips available for some time, so I am thinking there is a redesign/upgrade coming. Personally, I'll wait.

You might be better off keeping the plastic frame with he Z20 and doing all your learning on it....maybe upgrade the head as you can afford.....

If your going to keep it and upgrade the motor make sure you have the new motor mount with the extra bearing that holds the primary shaft. If not the extra power will flex the frame and strip the primary gear. The Z20 is perfect for the plastic frame.

Thanks for all the responses ^^. Doesn't seem like there's much that needs to be upgraded, I just don't want to get into upgrading the frame for 200$ since I might as well just get another kit imo .

For the most part I was thinking of upgrading the head and tail so I can run a higher headspeed to give it some more punch since My T-rex 450 is flying circles around my Hurricane at the moment @_@.

With a Z30 your Trex 450 will sure be skarrrred, it wont even try doing any circles. With a Z30 on my hurry it has more punch than my Trex 500 stock.

=D what is the KV on the motor and what kind head speed are you running ? Also is the stock 50 A esc going to be enough for a Z30 ?

the z30 is a 1110kv motor... the stock 50amp esc wont be enough because it pulls more than that... 75amp esc would be good... im planning on running around 2300 headspeed on mine once i get everything setup which it should have plenty of pop to it

i bet there is some kind of upgrade comming out for the cnc grips because now grandrc.com has the upgrade performance package for sale like readyheli had... and readyheli is still out of stock

Based on all the feedback I saw in another thread about the CNC blade grips, I'm taking a SWAG that ReadyHeli asked for an update to fix the problems. If I remember correctly, some people were having a lot of difficulty getting the bearings out and it varied greatly from grip to grip. That could be a design problem or a manufacturing problem. Either one could take a while to work out.

I'll wait.

I hope the Z30 is a lot more powerful than the z20 980 since the head seems very easy to bog down if not careful with collective management.

It sure is but you had better have big batteries and high C rating.....it will kill 2200 20c lipos.

Ahh I assume the same would go for some 2200 25C or is it just a short 3 minute flight time then ? I'm not to sure how the size of a pack works but I heard the larger the pack the more power and performance ??

Yes the bigger the packs and the higher the C rating means the pack can supply more power.

25C seem to be the about the least you can use with the stock Gaui motors or the Z30.
