View Full Version : stock gears + z20a = bad mesh?

So, I have the stock plastic frame with the stock gears and a z20a, and with the motor pushed all the way back until it's nearly rubbing the frame, the gear mesh is way too loose. Anyone else have this problem?

I'll try to take pics when I get home.

I just took my stock 14t pinion off the Gaui motor and installed it on my z20a-980 and then did the paper test. No problems that I know of.

Mine was touching the side lever support and had to dremmel it a bit. I don't think you can do it with a 13t pinion without killing the lever support.

I'm using a 13t... Had to dremel 1mm off the screw in that ball link so it didn't rub.

Here's a pic (best I could get considering the location of the pinion)

I've only ever tried the 14, 15 and 16T on the Z20 motor with the plastic frame. I know the 14, 15 and 16T mesh up fine.

I had to dremel mine a little on both sides to get the 14t to work properly.

Just be careful to not take too much off that holds the levers on. I cut mine at an angle like th motor.

I fixed my problem with a CHP frame :), I can probably fit a 3" diameter motor in there now.

How many teeth on the stock gears?

I think I'd rather get a set of gears w/ a bigger front gear than start cutting the frame, there's not a whole lot to cut away behind those levers.

I have just built up with a Z20A, 14T pinion and a 50T primary gear - absolutely no problems with mesh or clearance on the frame

Yeah, I just fitted my z20 and it will not have proper mesh w/ a 14t without some dremel work. Looks like only a few thousands off each side will do it though. I thought I had it until I put some power on it and could hear the gears meshing loudly. I then checked the backlash and its just way too loose.

I love this heli but the gear mesh is the biggest PITA I have ever seen....They really should have come up with something better...:dontknow

Anyone know any vendors with upgrade gears in stock?

If you go with the 50T front gear and 15 or 16 pinion you wont need to clear anything for the motor. 15T/50T will give similar HS compared to 13T/42T stock gears.

Yep, I just need a front gear that's a little bigger, and there are plenty of pinion options to match with it. Problem is I can't find a front gear in stock anywhere (except the 42T).

Was hoping for something that isn't on the opposite side of the world, but that's better than nothing, thanks! :)
