Still charging with the start voltage 3.1 for the pack and has come up to 6.74v 1500mah over a two hour period. What is up with that?????

Google "Trickle Charge". It's overcharging your batteries, but on NiCD/NiMH, that balances the cells rather than damaging them because they bleed off the excess voltage as heat.
I often leave NiCDs on the charger overnight to get them fully-charged and balanced. It might put twice the Ah rating of the pack into it, but as long as the cells are good they're ready to go.

Ok so I must be going mad. There is nothing wrong with my charger, I am now discharging the same battery at 400ma and have discharged 960ma in 145min, voltage reading 4.85v .........what is going on with this batt?

Thanks Redgiki, that only explains half of it though. I have just charged a identical pack that I use in my Raptor Titon and it behaved as normal. 300mah to top it up for tommorow.
I am now discharging the suspect battery which I have never put in a bird and will give the results soon.

Ahh, didn't realize you already had experience with NiCD.
Good chance of a bad cell, then, with some serious self-discharge. I'd check voltage on each cell, I just had a bad cell trash my bird (see my recent post in the Safety forum). Good luck.
