I have been in the market for a larger companion for my 450 for quite some time but could never find a machine in my price range. After much searching and hoping and eBay bidding I finally got me a new Rappy .50v2 from a local guy.

Here's everything that came with the heli
.50 Thinder Tiger engine (needs to be broken in)
Full set of JR NES-507 servos
JR 4cell 1400mah receiver pack
JR G410T gyro
Muffler (can't remeber the brand though but it's used)
Header tank
Cnc metal swash
Carbon fiber tail servo mount
A set of woodie mains
Canopy and decal sheet
All brand new!!

I have gone throught the set up and everything looks perfect. He told me he had built this machine with the intent of using it for sport flying. Went to Raptortechnique.com and used their setup guides to compare to what he had done and everything is spot on. Just have to get a few things to get her airborne (starter shaft, fuel, receiver, and a glow plug). I have been up since 5am this morning just staring at this machine. Tinkering with this, messing with that, spin this, tug that. Everything is indeed where it should be. I am in awe of its sheer size. Just for sh*ts and giggles I balanced my 450 on one of the mains!!

Now for the questions:
What have I gotten myself into?
Are Raptor owners called 'Rappers'?
Can I use my DX6 to fly this thing? (hover around at about 10ft up and 30 feet out)
I will be getting a new radio within this month for it. DX6i is looking very good right now.

Finally I have given it a name. "Tiny" since I didn't want my T-Rex450 to feel left out, I finally gave it a name (after nearly a year with me) "Zit".

Sounds like a nice score! Is that a 50 or a 53 TT engine?

The gentleman I bought it from told me its a .50, I haven't taken it out yet, which I will have to to install the glow plug. OK I don't really have to take it out to install the glow plug, but now I have a good reason to.

Tonight she who should be obeyed wants to do the decals for me. She did a super job with my T-Rex450. She actually likes Tiny. She even told me that she would be willing to try and learn to fly it. I told her she could use Zit for that.... But she is afraid of Zit. Wait until she hears Tiny all revved up... bwaahahahaha

Why do you have to take the engine out to put in the glow plug? I was able to install a remove glow extender (which you will need too if you don't have one yet), without taking it out. I had full access to the glow plug.

Edit: Woops, I just saw where you say you don't HAVE to. ;)

Glad you got your new Rappy.....it's the same heli I got a couple weeks ago, the Raptor 50 v2. I maidened it Saturday and it rocks!

My 30 - 50 conversion should be done tonight! I probably wont be able to break 'er in till Saturday though. Damn rain. Maybe I'll push the bikes out of the garage and hover around in there.

DX 6 will work to fly it but it is the minimum:

1 throttle
2 aileron
3 elevator
4 pitch
5 rudder
6 gyro gain

As you can see a 6 channel transmitter is maxed out on a heli. If you plan to eventualy put a governor on, that will use a channel. Go scale, landing gear, if it is a blackhawk, there is an aileron on the horizontal stab that can be hooked to a servo, we are up to 9 channels now.

I started out with a 6 channel radio and out grew it in about a year. Im now using a 9 channel (JR 9303) and I'm actualy faking a 10th channel on my airwolf with an E-switch, to turn on interior or exterior lights.

I tell people looking for a radio, they are like computers, get the best you can afford, it will be that much longer till you out grow it.

P.S. Welcome to the club and no, we are not rapers, the airplane guys call me a rotor head:(

...and no, we are not rapers...
I just want to re-emphasize this. And we are not rappers either. Raptonians maybe.

I am picking up a new DX6i and a pair of 6200 receivers (one for Zit) this afternoon and some fuel and a few other odds and ends. Hopefully I will get to maiden Tiny by this evening!! I am really excited!!!!

the raptor is a great heli
i love the hell out of mine.
couple of things though.

seeing that no one covered it already

this thing is NOT your T-Rex.
its is big and it is powerful .
you will prolly be intimidated a little when you bring it up for the first time.
the crash fear the size difference and the sound
just relax and fly it....it will be easier to fly then the rex.
if you can fly your rex...the raptor will fly like a dream.

if you can ... have the guy that sold it to ya or someone show you the proper way to start it.
that is a must ... you need to know how to hold the heli in case of a hot start.
hot starts can and prolly will happen ...and you need to be ready for it.

ALWAYS make sure the RX battery pack has enough charge.
dont have to check it before every flight ... but check it often.

now for the most important thing ... the one thing you must do each and every time you fly it.

HAVE FUN! ! ! ! ! :D

your gonna love it

congrats man

Well for some reason I grab it by the top of the head with my fingers spread evenly around. Kinda like a claw grip, holding the flybar carrier and one of the blade grips. I kinda figure if I end up in a situation where the engine hot starts I'll have the head immobilized and the clutch will slip inside the bell. I learned this from my RC nitro buggies. Keep a foot in front of it in case it decides to run away once you start it.

I was tought to hold the actual blade when starting it.

OH and another tip for us guys that came from electric:

Don't forget to take off the glow starter! LOL! I did this today and when doing a fast flyby, I noticed somethine fall off....then something else fell off. I landed immediately and found the glow starter. But it had separated into two. Oh well, bet I never do that again!

You need to get into a routine with starting. If I'm distracted things can happen that aren't fun. Typically I forget to turn on the Heli and then start it..........Not good. I pray that the throttle is not on full. BTW if the motor is running fast enough with the hot start the clutch will not slip easily. Grab hard and hold on as your going to burn out the clutch until it stalls or you can plug the exhaust and stop the motor.

still have yet to install it ... been having to much fun flyin :D

i to started the heli with out turning on the servos.
again thank god that the throttle was at idle.

Ok not really... I was breaking in the engine with the blades on (Idled through a full tank of fuel). I have read various takes on break in of heli engines, some people say do it with the mains on, some say with the mains off. Some will say hover it through a full tank, others rant about just letting it idle. So I did a bit of both but mostly the idling technique. I idled through a little more than half a tank without the mains on. Then I put the mains on and gave just enough throttle to get them spinning slowly. When the main tank was nearly empty but the header tank was still full I figured... Lets apply some throttle.

As she sputtered up to speed, the blades began to whistle through the air. What a sweet sweet sound!! Got her light on the skids and a tail wag began to develop. Spool down, lower gyro gain, spool up again. Light on the skids, held it there for a moment. Didn't notice any odd behavior (shakes, wag, head wobble, etc). Gave it some more throttle and some counter aileron and up she went!!! I WAS AIRBORNE!!!!!!!! Ok more like a foot off the ground but still, let me be excited about that... For a whole 30 seconds until the fuel in the header tank ran out leaving me with a case of the grins and some dirty boxers lmao!!!

No kidding!!

Today I hope to have it at least in a decent hover....
