So I see on the schedule http://www.valleyflyers.com/flash_apollo.htm that this Saturday the 3rd, they have a Valley Fliers Fun Fly/ Hobby People Engine Clinic. Will the Heli pads be closed? Looks like they will be closed on Sunday, but not sure about Saturday. Do they close The heli area for Fun Flys? I'm not wanting to pack up and drive out to find the Heli area taped off... Happened a few weeks ago :arggg:
Thanks

Who do you talk to, to arrange a fun fly?
Pete said we would get shut down if we tried, I took that to mean that they don't allow Fun flys at all.
edited, I was thinking of whittier.
whoops, sorry.

Don't know, but the schedule is full of them. All planes though... I only see 1 or 2 heli things there.

more than likely if there is a airplane funfly there, they will shut down the helicopter pad due to radio impounding, even though you have 2.4ghz and you remain on the helicopter pad thats not in use, they tend to shew you away. thanks for the notification i was contemplating going on saturday as well.

I was going to head out to Apollo this weekend for a change.. Guess I'll be the lone heli amidst a pile of planks at Hansen Dam.
I love the bugs and all the hay... :( Anyone care to join me?

Swell... I'm likely not going to be able to go out next weekend, and the weekend after is another event at the field. Then 1 weekend free, then an event, then a free weekend, then another event... :arggg::arggg::arggg:
I need my heli practice! I can't even hover nose in yet :(...
I know about the field by the 710 in Carson, but didn't care for it because they had two very small hover pads and the single large flying area, so it looked like I would do more waiting around than flying. What I like about Apollo is that I can go to the secondary pad, which is just as large as the main pad, and there is never more than a single flight wait, so I can go out and do 9 flights in the morning and be done by lunch. So any other places around? My criteria would be a large flight area (not huge, but not a hover only pad), and not much waiting. I've tried local parks and fields, but they either have too many people, No RC signs, or they are fenced and locked.
LA people, where do you fly?

Reading through the VF minutes:
Mitch Kahn:
Mitch is very happy to see the ‘no flying over the grass’ signs at the south end. He is requesting a couple of more signs.
Mitch has been getting requests for learning to fly helicopters. He is requesting that the advertising for free lessons by the club states that helicopter lessons are not included.
Mitch suggests that helicopter flying not being allowed to fly during events. It has been discussed in the past and has been left to the CD.
Mitch suggests the CD regularly sends someone to police the helicopter area.
Cliff suggested that temporary no flying signs be made that can be posted.
Geez, we really do get the short end of the stick.

if you have an answer to this question my friend, please let me know! apollo can get very busy on the weekends but i do understand what you mean when you say apollo is loaded with events. i remember i would get kicked out due to those pylon races on weekends.
There is nothing really local for myself, everything is 30 minutes or more if i want to fly nitro.

I guess I've lucked out so far... been there quite a few times since January, and it was only a couple weeks ago I showed up to a closed Heli Area. Now that I'm looking at the schedule, I see the past few months have had scattered 1 day events, but now the schedule is full of 2 day events...
I have a call into the event organizer to see if the Heli area will be closed or not...
I'm sure it will be.... (Do they do Radio impounds for FunFlys?) I figured they just did that for competitions.

Discriminating against the heli crowd is bullcrap.:bs
The heli crowd will continue to take a back seat unless we group together and take a stand.
We are going to have to take time out of our busy lives to protest the anti heli attitude.
Contact info for Apollo field management?

kind of sad really. I was going through whats involved to join and get my membership.
After reading the minutes and seeing some heli dislike it turned me off to the idea being a member.

Well, after all that, I need to run to the Hobby store today, so I dropped by the field just to see if the Heli area was open, and sure enough, it was. Unfortunately, I didn't have my Helis. There were lots of other guys flying though...
It would be nice if the online schedule listed the Helipads as open or closed...
