Flying this afternoon (vid of that uploadng now), I got some TALL grass caught in the tail rotor shaft. I got it cleared, but now I have a strage ticking/clicking noise come from my the area of the main gear as well as a wobble. If I had to guess, I would say it is my main bearing gone bad? See for yourself...

The main gear one-way bearing does need some maintenance.
I think the manual states every 80 flights or so.

I would remove the gear, clean the bearing with alcohol or electric motor cleaner and relube.
See if that helps first.
Also check for missing or worn teeth on the gears and belt.

Thanks Wolf. I did check the gears and they look good. I cannot see the metal gears well, but I would have to assume the plastic gear would go first. I did not check the belt, but it sounds as if the sound stays near the main gear. I need to check out the bearing then. My guess seems to be right on. Dang, weird how grass in the tail shaft messed up the bearing. Unless, I got some grass up in there too. That I could not see outside. I need to get a pin light and take a look here shortly.

I had a similar crash in grass but only tweaked everything.....and back in the air.......that sound sure does remind me of the gear and I see lots of wobble in the gear as you spin up. Did you not hit throttle hold soon enough and a gear warped? Check closer on the teeth too.....one time it all looked good but there was an actual bare spot. I only found it by spinning by hand and listening to the sounds.

Hummingbird leads to Blade > Blade leads to camera > camera is leading me to a T1 line! Uploading movies to YT takes forever! And I have a good cable connection. I want to go fly my sim online now but this upload (today's flight) would kill my bandwidth.

That doesnt sound like a good cable connection, yeah my yt uploads take forever but I can do whatever I like while waiting....

Ok I can do stuff. I want to go online and fly though. That takes some bandwidth. Would probably make for a crappy connection for anyone joining my session. Man, when I make up the money I have spent this last month, I'm going to buy you a copy of Phoenix just so you can join us online.

Oh yeah, you will need to see the vid I am uploading now. There is mention of you in it. :bad

Well, here it is, the video of my flight where the grass wrapped around my tail shaft. I pause in the beginning to get the grass out and check out main gear noise. Once I determine there is nothing seriously wrong and it will still fly, I continue on (yes, hard headed). It is a fairly good flight I think. I really need someone on the camera zooming in. As I fly forward, it gets harder to see. There is some commentary; some of it is hard to hear. Still learning about the new camera so hopefully they get better as time goes on. I will add quickly, this flight really has me thinking about taking my training wheels off.

Without further ado… Here it is:

I dont hear any noise ? but then again my hearing is not up to par.

You gotta luv them winds - I was flying last night and it was pretty calm was almost boring :)

Just wait - when your gear comes off and you increase your headspeed you'll see that bird can handle the wind pretty well.

Good Job! yeah you need someone to operate the camera for you.

I had edited the vid. The sound I mention is the sound that you can hear in the close up vid I did of my main gear. My mention opf you was about the winds. Not sure if you could hear that or not. I did not want anyone to think I thought I had it bad, because you have it much worse out there I know. Wind to me here, is a breeze to you probably.

I tell you again, after that flight, I am really tempted to pull them off. I am feeling a lot more confident now. But, I think I will fight myself there, get the heli repaired, then take it out to a ball park or flying field where I have more room and try some low level flying with the gear on first, just incase I need to bring it down quick. Then I would not have to worry so much about a good landing.

looks like it was a bit windy on that day judging by the tree in the background. I noticed on my B400 that even the slightest gust will cause the heli to drop quickly or rise quickly depending on the orientation the "disc" is angled relative to the wind. If you go into Phoenix and raise the wind speed and gust speed in the weather settings, you'll see what I mean.

BTW, I hear a clicking sound too on my B400. Sounds like its coming from my one-way bearing. I haven't bothered to take it apart and investigate though.

When I spin the rotor by hand, it sounds like a ten-speed bike when you free-pedal backwards.

Your main gear is wobbling like crazy. If I were you, I'd pull those gears and bearings apart and inspect them, I bet you'll find the problem.

Just take your time and go slow ...... even with gear on 'act' like its not there and if you get in a situation DONT PANIC and bring it down slow for a soft touch down. I think you'll be fine.

Good to hear on the wind. I have seen that in Phoenix. I usually fly with fairly strong winds on the sim. I feel it helps me learn control.

Yes, the sound is very similar to that of a ten-speed bike.

Yep, I need to dig into there and see what is up. If I continue to fly like that, it may do more damage. But by the time I get home today, I may not care. Under deadline and will want some sort of release by the time I get home today. I guess what ever I break can be repaired so... :YeaBaby:

Hey Mike, real good flying I was in the same boat as you as to whether to take off the gear or not I am telling you take them off. it is scary as heck. but after the first or second flight its no big deal. you just have to do it. I got up one morning and said this is it. wait for real good weather and do it ...it will be SO worth it, I can see you Are more then ready.. man I have to save and get Phoenix no one here to fly with

AGAIN - not trying to rush, but you will be sooooo pleased. Just dont do it on a windy day and maybe take baby steps if you'll feel better. Lift off to about 3 feet and set her back down gently do that once or twice and you'll be like HOLLY CRAP what was I so affraid of. But if there is a mishap and you crash, blame Otto not me :YeaBaby:

Just having fun with ya buddy, I dont wanna take the blame you told him too :P

If that is the option for spektrum yes, if they dont have a spektrum option then the JR set-up should work. I had to order the JR cable for Reflex......JR Hmmmm maybe thats why I am partial to thier servos ;)

HeliMix

otto, the default cable is jr/spectrum and as long as you have the DX6i, you're good to go.

If I do and I crash, I'm blaming you both!

I am really thinking about it. The more I fly the sim, the more comfortable I feel at trying. One thought I had was to go ahead and cut back my training gear some. That is why I used wood so I could do that. Honestly, I forgot until my printer rep said today watching a video, "well, why don't you make them smaller and try that." Not only is she smart, she's hot!
