View Full Version : Taking 500 Plunge Today. What Do I Need?
Hi All,
I'm thinking about taking the Logo 500 3D plunge today. I will be replacing my Swift 16 that has 400 flights on it. It's been a good heli, but it just doesn't fly on a par with my 600s. I've heard the 500 3D might not only meet, but beat the performance of my 600s.
Here's what I have:
- Century 600+ motor (1100kV)
- Jazz 80-6-18
- 3X DS821 servos
- JR 770 3D w 8900G
- WR 5.4V step down
- WR Hercules 6V 5A BEC
- 3X TP 5000 batteries
- SAB 550 blades
- K&B tail blades
My questions are:
- What do I need to order to get my 500 3D going?
- Do I need a metal motor mount?
- Do I need a pinion? Which one?
- What main gear?
- Do I need a counter bearing?
- What should I put in a crash kit?
Thanks much!:YeaBaby:

3X DS821 servos need to go. They aren't good for anything but hovering and have been known to break and cause crashes. Get some 9252's or 9452's
770 gyro.... spend about $30 more and get a Solid G you just can't beat it for the money.
I would buy Flightpower 6s 5350 Evolite's if it were me.
SAB blades tend not to fold back do to the root shape in some applications. Research this or buy Rototech 560mm
Metal motor mount would be a big plus to keep your gears lined up straight thus helping to prevent stripping. If it were me I'd buy one. Along with Mod 7 main gear and pinion.
No counter bearing needed if your running 6s Lipos, mod 7 main gear and get the metal motor mount.
Buy Mikado servo horns when you order your get.... they are really nice and makes geometry better. Deans connectors for your battery packs. Nylon landing gear screws as this will help your frames survive a crash. You may want to consider a Tango 45-10 motor.... gives long flight times with decent power.
Crash kit......
Main blades
Tail blades
Feathering shaft
Main Shaft
Main Gear
Tail Boom
Tail boom struts
Vertical Tail fin
Fly bar & Paddles
Landing skids
Tail servo control rod
Just my .02 others will have more to say.
Hi Lithium,
Thanks for the post and all the good info. That's a great tip on the servo horns. I'll be sure to order them.
A friend on another forum recommended a Trew 5mm collar to prevent vertical play on the motor shaft. So that sounds like another important piece.
FXAeromodels has the kit with metal motor mount and .7 mod main gear for $429. That sounds like the way to go.
Are the plastic canopies paintable or do I need to get a fiberglass canopy. I like to go with neon colors.
Thanks guys!:YeaBaby:

I think the kit from FXAreomodels comes with a Fiberglass canopy. Call them up and ask.

When I bought my kit from FXA a few months back it came with the FG canopy. Both .5 and .7mod maingears are included as well. Really nothing other than the pinion and the servo arms are needed besides all the electronics. It's not like a Trex where you need to upgrade things right away.
No need for the counterbearing on a L500 it's more for the L600. Plus with 6S 5000 batteries the counterbearing will interfere with battery placement.
With an 1100KV motor your probably going to want either a 14 or 15T mod.7 pinion and use the .7 gear.
I guarantee that the L500 will smoke your 600s. I haven't flown my 600 since I got mine:YeaBaby:. For that matter I don't think Finless has flown his 600s since getting the Logo. He says it's one of his favorite helis.

My questions are:
- What do I need to order to get my 500 3D going? 6S lipos see this po (http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.php?p=658545&postcount=9)st (http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.php?p=658545&postcount=9)
- Do I need a metal motor mount? Yes
- Do I need a pinion? Which one? 14 or 15t Mod .7 - try 14 first for the SAB 550s
- What main gear? Modulus .7
- Do I need a counter bearing? No
- What should I put in a crash kit? Tail boom, flybar, mainshaft, flybar big ball links #965, landing gear for starters then belt, belt pulleys, boom struts !
The plastic canopy is easily paintable - I have had no probs with TAMIYA paints for PLASTICS
Why not consider the L500 V-Stabi combo kit ? That is even more of a rocket and not too difficult to set up. I have found the Hitec 6965s good but you can't argue with 9452s or 9252s - definately give the DS821s the flick

Do you think 14T or 15T better with the 40L/10 8P motor (1100KV) and 550MM SAB rotors

I'd go for the 15t to give over 2000 HS on 75% throttle

Wouldn't i be better running 85% and 14T pinion? 75% seems a bit low. I am sports flier

I think you'd get a similar result either way - but when you wanted more HS your 15t pinion is sat there waiting for you :)

I did my first flight on the logo today with 14T pinion and 1100KV motor on 6S. Even on 100/inh/85/inh/100 it still needs more.
I will swap over to the 15T when it arrives.
Also i find it odd that the heli when resting on the skids is angled forward, when i land i feel like it may tip over and touch the ground, i guess i will get used to it.

Flew with the 15T, hard timing and slacked off the belt more. I love it, flies so well, no pitch up all
