View Full Version : Transition from "Normal" to "Idle Up"?? Help!

So....
I've been practicing on G4 transitioning from Normal (I guess that's Heading Hold, right?) to "Idle Up" (Stunt Mode).
In the Sim, I get about mid stick at 10 feet and then flip the switch, which works ok. I can then do some basic rolls and stuff, I switch back to "Normal" and land. Been practicing it a while now (a week....a guess that's not really a "while")
Anyway, yesterday evening I thought I'd just "TRY" idle up and see if it could at least hover the REAL heli. Again, I went up to 10 feet, mid stick, and flipped the switch. The Blade 400 shot up fast and I immediately flipped it back so I could recover.
All of my DX6i settings are still factory...
Anyone have any advise on how to transition into "Idle Up" without having to have me change my shorts every time I flip that switch?!?!?
Should I change some of the pitch and throttle curves as suggested in an earlier post?
Throttle/Pitch Curves Thread (http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=71969)
I want to learn this right, and I figured I'd throw this one out to the experts.
THANKS!!!

The problem you had was that the two different throttle curves are equal.
If you had both curves set at say, 80% at mid stick, and flipped the switch at that time,
you wouldn't notice a difference. The idle-up curve is probably set at like 85-90% at mid stick and that was much faster than your normal curve. If you want to try idle-up for a hover or two, you could spool up to about mid stick, which should have the pitch at 0 degrees in both idle up and normal and switch while it's still on the ground. Then you could take off and hover and land and switch back to normal.
Does this make sense to you:?

ok, check your pitch curve in both norm and stunt after mid stick both should be the same(mid(pos3) 50(pos4) 75(posH) 100, i'm only saying this because you said evrything is factory settings but the settings on my radio when it got here were not all adjusted to where the "factory settings" should have been. most were correct but some were wrong. also as said before the throttle curve is different so the increased head speed might give a little bit of a jump but not shooting up like you described. hope this helps

You want the throttle to change, but not the pitch, heres what you do. Make your Normal Throttle curve 0, 25,50,75,100 and normal pitch curve something like this 40,45,50,75,100.
Now make your idle 1 throttle curve 90,90,90,90,90 or 100,90,85,90,100 and your idle 1 pitch curve to a linear 0,25,50,75,100. Now that the pitch is equal the only way you can switch to idle 1 and not have the heli take off is while you are on the ground and at mid stick ( 0 pitch) you would flip into idle 1, heli will make alot more noise as throttle goes from 50 to 90, but heli should not move on the ground because to get the heli off the ground normally you are at 3/4 stick. With zero pitch the heli will not go up regardless of the throttle %. Now if you are flying and go into idle 1 you will definitely notice as the heli will want to go up because it is not at zero pitch, because to fly it has to be at some positive pitch.
hope this helps

Thanks guys!
I thought that flipping it at 10 ft would give me "some" recovery room, but it looks like I need to mid stick it on the ground and then idle up.
One more question.....is the gyro REALLY going to be affected as much as it is in G4? if so, I'm still going to have a LOT of practicing to do.....
THANKS AGAIN!

Slowdown Murf. You're getting ahead of the rest of the class. Oh yeah, you're always at the head of the class, you're a teacher.

Ahead of the class... I am not even in the same room as murf

HeliMix: So, I just got through flying it again right at dusk, and tried the "just flip the switch at mid stick" method of STUNT MODE. It immediately spun up and jumped up to 8 feet and the "PUCKER" effect took place and I immediately put it back to NORMAL.
I think I'll get my money out of REALFLIGHT and simple 3-D for the next month....
Yeah, I'm Scared......REAL scared!!!!!:(
I'm just gonna tell myself "it takes 6 months before you idle up!".....and try to believe in that lie!:YeaBaby:
Peace!

Something must be off on your idle up pitch curve.
If you flip the switch at half stick and you have zero pitch in both modes the heli will not fly regardless of the head speed.
I run 80% throttle in normal mode at half stick, zero pitch. The heli will not lift until you introduce some positive pitch, usually around 5 degrees.
You should also try to match not only pitch, at half stick and above, but throttle as well. Or it should be fairly close so the head speed doesn't make a huge jump.
This is explained very well in Finless Bob's video "Pitch and Throttle Curves 101".
