I reprogrammed my Futaba 7CHP last night to give me a more advanced normal throttle/pitch and an idle up mode (-4, + 9). I flew the heli today and how cool is idle up? What a difference. It was a little windy today and I was working pretty hard in normal mode to keep my hovers steady. I got the gumption to flip it into idle up and headspeed is a great thing!
I found all maneuvers to be easier, although different. Yes, the heli is more sensitive, but it also seems much more stable. I am not convinced that I have my motor tuned correctly - I think it got a little hot in idle up, but I haven't purchased a temp gauge so I am not sure. With FF, collective control is tough - I wasn't keeping the heli very level.
....and I did my first auto. How, you say? I was having so much fun that I ran it out of gas. I know, not a great thing to do, but I was hitting full collective and laughing as the heli screamed toward the sky. All of sudden, a puff of smoke and down she was coming. I did have enough presence to dump the collective and "flare" at the end. It wasn't pretty, but no damage - I think that qualifies as a successful auto?
