A beautiful night here in middle Tn (I know not as good as on the freakin island of JB's and Wazzer) but it was still a great night to fly.
Took the 550 and 5 sets of packs to a small field....(the one I mentioned before with the little freakin bush in it)
Well I'm flying around havin a great time....flips, rolls, loops, nose in, pretty much everything I can do at this stage on the first three packs.
I load up the first set of 3300's and rip around for a while....there is a slight breeze blowing (from the perfect direction) I have been practicing the heck out of autos on the sim....and geting pretty good....so I cinch up the cahones sack and TH.....it's coming down pretty good and it's not getting as close to me as I would like but I'm in control, right up till the last moment when the @$#@$@#%$ little bush (the only one for miles) jumped out and grabbed the tip of my blades. No damage, set down perfectly....man am I pumped.
I do two more on that pack...load up anouther set of 3300's and proceed to do about 6 more autos.... Boy is that agreat feeling....:clappp
Some were better than others but all resulted in being able to use the heli again :smokin:
Made a couple of perfect ones....and no one was there to see them....
I have to tell you, if you have a sim, practice the heck out of autos....because it is "not natural" to go into negative or neatral stick when you loose power....but you have to to maintain headspeed.
I was actually surprised because i think the 550 auto's better and easier than the sim.
my st up was 515 cf baldes, z20, 14t pinion, 20 OWB, Trex LG.
I'll be dreaming about this all night long...

Congrats! I'm going to have to start working on that too. I've been working on inverted flight, tic-tocs and piro-flips lately. I done a few autos on the sim that haven't ended in crashes. Might be a good thing to know in case I have to some time.

Is there anywhere that I can look to see what kind of manuvers can be done....?
i would love to practice some other stuff, just not sure what can be done, especially with the Z20....it does lack power in high pitch manuvers.
Yeh....practice theauto's and just go for it....land in soft grass if you need to. I was on gavel and it actually helps to be able to slide. I read where they recommend you take off the rubber stops on the gear so you can slide.

Hey Mjdee,
Congrats Bro. I have some simm work to do before trying autos but if they come as easy as 'nose in' with the Hurri then they should be a sinch eh? Ha ha, let you know, well done again mate. Both Ben and I have been grounded for a few weeks with work, family etc but, as we both hope to be 'on site' this week I am sure there will be some flyin' done

I need to move the throttle hold switch to where I can get to it so i can start doing autos. I can do them pretty easily on the sim.
I'm using the Gaui upgrade motor, so I have plenty of power. However, I only get 5:00 max of flight time with a 100-90-80-90-100 throttle curve and FP 3200 EVO 30 batts. Yes, I have the head singing along at well over 2000. Probably more like 2300. From my limited experience, tic-tocs seem to take a lot of power though.
I would think you could do them with the Z20 if you got the head speed high enough with a 100% flat throttle curve. You could probably get 3 or 4 out of it before you lost the head speed to keep it going.
As long as you have enough cyclic response, loops, rolls and flips shouldn't be a problem with the Z20.

What Heli shall I use in the Phoenix sim to get most close to a Hurry 550 when doing autorotation?
Thanks

have no idea about that sim.. but you can get heli-x (www.heli-x.net) for free and download the Hurricane 550 models

Hehe... Hurri models for Heli-X are way harder than the real one. I'm using SAB 530mm blades and you really have to work to bring the heli down, the Hurri just don't wants come down :)
I think in reality everything is a little bit slower...

hehe.. I've been doing autos in heli-x from 250m high with either a 180 degree turn or at times a full 360 degree turn ending in a nice soft landing. have I mentioned how much I like that sim and the models you made for it :D
Way to go ! Its definitely inspiring .....gotta give it a go !
I have the Z20 14T and it handles the loops and rolls quiet fine, does bogg a bit if the loop is too tight .
Must agree with worldofmaya...the hurri has to be flown down (powered of cource) so if it stays up UN-powered well..............got to get out to the field

Hehe... can't wait that the new version makes it way to the public. Than we can make a Hurri session. I made some major update to all models lately.
@mysticmead: 250m high? Man that's really high... the highest thing I fly is perhaps 15m :)
@woz: there was a long thread at a German forum about what's an real auto rotation. You can hold or even get more power in your rotor with positive pitch and forward movement... but I have to admit I never tried that :(

yep.. 250m+.. I just do those for fun.. most flying it much lower and I cna auto from much lower as well.. any idea when the new version is going to be ready? I emailed the author and asked to beta test for him, but he's busy working on the multi player part and said no :(

Sorry, don't know... the multi-player part makes a lot of trouble. Quit hard to find a solution for all the different systems.

Be patient "Grasshopper"....follow Obi-won and use the force....
The fun is in the journey, not the destination :banana
Hoes that for a bunch of :bs
When you get fairly good on the sim.....cinch up the cohones and just go for it.....it is really scary the first time "actually" cutting off a good running motor on purpose :wow2:
the 550 with 515 cf blades has plenty of inertia..the hardest part is to bring the collective down to zero or negative as your coming down, that's where sim practice REALLY helps, it becomes natural.
The 550 autos great....once you do one you won't be able to wipe the grin off and will land that way from every flight.
At least you don't have that %$#%#%$ bush that i put up with...

Way to go Mike! The first auto has a pucker factor of about 9.5 on the "PF" scale.:shock:My first auto was done in about 1985 with my schluter "Helistar".My instructor was standing next to me and I was shooting approaches and then throttling back on and going around.Well on one approach,my instructor reaches over and hit's my hold switch and says "Hold it ,Hold it,Hold it,flair, add collective" :wow2:I actually landed with no bounce or bump.I was so pumped I spent the rest of the flying session just shooting autos!! What a blast.Soo I know how elated you are being able to do this.It seems like such a simple
thing to do but it takes great timing to get it right and it's so much fun.CONGRATS!!! :Bang

Mark...
Thanks...I remember you talking about Auto's in another thread..
After the first one I did 10 more on the next pack...they really are cool to do...
Now, I did do them from the optimum position height, etc, hopefully I won't need to do one for a breakdown, but it's nice to know the heli won't fall out of the air if you manage the collective properly.
I tried heli's back in the 70's....40 size FP, no gyro, Kraft radio...man that was a challenge...this new stuff makes it a piece of cake.
I really don't get much fun flying planks any more.
