View Full Version : BEC headache

I bought a Logo500 3D off Ebay that comes with 9452's on cyclic, 401+9254, Tango 45-10, Castle 80A ESC, and a Medusa 5/6V 3.5Amp BEC. I was a little worried about the BEC having only 3.5A capacity so I bought the WR 5 Amp BEC. Then I learned that the WR 5 Amp BEC doesn't do well with a PCM receiver. :DOH So here I sit with 3 BEC's (counting the 3 Amp one in the ESC) and I don't know if any of them will work reliably with my setup. :arggg:

Does anyone know how many Amps the 9452's pull or know where I can find such data? Also, what happens if you over-draw the BEC? Does the PCM receiver go into failsafe mode?

I used the Medusa 3.5a 6v BEC that you speak of on my Xero-G (which is a heavier machine) with the older 9451's and I never had a problem with it overheating or cutting out. I flew that heli pretty hard all the time. I really don't think you have a problem using that BEC with you setup...

I know BruceW in this forum also have had problems with the WR 5A BEC and a PCM receiver. He switched over to a CC 6A (5, 6A?) BEC.

I'm sure Bruce can explain more...

I had some PMs with Funflyer about that. As Team-Mayhem mentioned, the Medusa should be fine and hard stick stirring/pitch pumping on the bench for a minute should induce a problem if it could happen in flight.

Even with my CC BEC I can induced a brown-out on the bench with fast pitch pumping for about a minute. It seems the CC BEC will dip in voltage just enough to shut the RX down (AR7000) but it recovers in less than a second. The BEC became fairly hot when this happened but I've never seen it get hot after any of my flights - even after hard 3D. Since then I've switched to an AR9000 and have the Spektrum capacitor and cannot make it happen anymore.

I run spektrum but have a medusa bec on my Trex 600 with 9451 servos . Heavier bird and bigger disc load to move and I have not had any problems. Remember alot depends on how you fly. If your banging out 3D moves from the second you leave the ground without letting up you may start to worry about it.

Well I know the last thing you want to buy is another regulator or BEC, but this one is cheap and has gobs of power, downside is it requires a receiver battery, but I tend to like that better anyway:

I decided that I didn't want a separate receiver battery otherwise I would have gone with a Fromeco Arizona regulator because I really like the idea of their pin flag switch.

"Luckily" my skills are no where near being capable of stick banging 3D unless I'm headed for mother earth. I guess I'll stick with the Medusa for now and upgrade to the WR if/when I change over to 2.4Gz.

Anyone know what happens when you overdraw a BEC with a PCM receiver??? I'm guessing it goes into failsafe and reboots like the spektrum, unless the BEC let's go of the magic smoke that is.

I like the Arizona too but it's 3x the price and I like the fact that I can get 8 amps continuous for $25....

The pcm receiver would recover very quickly IMO.
