View Full Version : Flips!!! w/Video
This is my second time doing flips, first time was yesterday, but I didn't have a cameraperson.
They are still really sloppy, and I damn near lost it once, way too much collective. I bog it hard, but no crashes. It was intense, I was sweating and shaking afterwards. This is with my new gyro/tail servo. It is a HG5000/5083mg, and I couldn't be happier with it, I would have never tried this with the G110.
I have wanted to do this for a long time, I have only been flying since January, but I was feeling like I was stuck in a rut of just hovering. I was always afraid to crash, but now I just don't care as much. I accept that crashing is part of learning, and if you are always scared you will never try anything new. Anyways here is the video, and please don't be too hard on me, I know I still am not very good.

I will practice this every night this week when I get home from work, and maybe this weekend I wil try to do the same thing with my Trex 600.

That is freaking awesome......I am at a stage or 2 behind you still too scared to cross that threshold but just zipping around is starting to get boring, may some day soon (not too soon)
Hey where is Murrieta, CA? you need to come to the bay area and teach some of us newb how it is done. You da man!

I've found that the one thing that is the underlying cause of almost all of my intimidation is having "stuff" all around where I'm flying. When I fly in front of my house I've got the possibility of neighbor kids running by, people walking dogs, cars driving by, trees in people's yards, and even the houses across the street. None of them are very close, but just knowing they're there is intimidating. When I'm flying there I pretty much just stick to hovering and really gentle flying back and forth.
One day I took my heli to my parents house. They back to a golf course. I went flying out there (when there were no golfers anywhere around) and I was flying all over the place. I even got so confident that I got up some speed and did a loop. Then I did a couple more.
Lock, if you get out of your back yard, I have a feeling your confidence will go way up.

I think you are right just a matter of doing it.......any special settings to do that first loop? idle up mode, normal mode?
Lately I've been flying with all pitch curves linear and in normal mode with throttle curve 60-80-80-90-100
Lock, Murrieta is about 50 miles north of San Diego, so the bay area would be quite a drive for me, but it would be cool. I'm really not better than you I have just come to not be so scared of crashing, and I have such a wide open place to fly that I don't have to worry about running into something. It really helps to have a lot of recovery room and lots of altitude. I would never dream of trying that in my backyard, I don't even hover in my backyard anymore.
I can't wait to get home from work and do it again.

Nothing special, but I did it in idle-up. With that normal-mode curve of yours, you're practically in idle-up already. If like you said, all your pitch curves are linear, just set your Stunt throttole curve to 100-90-80-90-100 and flip the switch while you're hovering.
I always fly idle-up now. Discovered in the sim that dropping the collective to decend really spooled down the RPMs, and flying in idle-up made FF and FFF much easier. Now, the only time I'm in Normal is when first spooling up. Get it up into a hover and flip the switch; fly around; land (in idle-up) and immediately flip the Throttle Hold switch. Just remember to re-select Normal mode and zero the throttle/collective before turning off Throttle Hold.

Nice job! I think I'm almost ready to try that. I'm getting comfortable with circuits and hovers. So is a backflip just full back elevator?

Pretty much, pull back on cyclic, and go negative on collective when inverted, then back to positive when upright again. Not as easy as it sounds, thats why mine are so sloppy. You also have to be very careful not to give rudder input when moving the collective up and down.
I have done thousands on the sim, and about 15-20 in real life, as a matter of fact my third cell is balancing right now, and then I will go out and do it again, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, if Lock is stage 2, and you are there... Then I am about at stage -8.
I'm working on it, I'm working on it. You think Speilberg did Star Wars on his PC in an hour? Geeezzzz!

Hey guys, a little bad news to report, well I'm waiting for YouTube to finish, and then I'll make a new thread. It will probably be about 9 tonight. Don't worry it's nothing too bad.
Let's just say today is not yesterday. See you later.

Guess I am practically doing idle up - yup I have to use throttle hold (with my curves) just to shut down :) I will play with idle up SOON - the weekend being the latest.

But I know why you did it so you are forgiven. You were trying to keep those about to fly that evening from grounding themselves.

Yep, and we have to share our failures along with our triumphs, everybody goes through the same things, and it helps to see that.

And actually, when you do start to use idle-up, you really should change your Normal curve to something more traditional like 0-60-80-90-100 instead of 60-80-80-90-100 so that (if you wanted to) you could have the option of spooling it all the way down without Throttle Hold. If mid-stick and above are same for Normal/Stunt, you should be able to flip the switch back and forth without any effect while you're hovering.
