I had asked in another thread if anyone had ideas for measuring wind speed without a wind gauge. I will be getting a wnd gauge, but it is not high on my wish list. A member here named SNAFU provided me with a great link I thought I would share with you all. At the link is a chart that gives you some crude ways to roughly determine wind speed. Rather neat little chart. You can view the chart at the link below.

Learn to read your surroundings. It's what snipers do. Look for smoke, flags, even tree branches. All weill give to a good deternination of wind speed strength and direction.

Another thing that makes a good wind guage is a lit cigarette. The smoke from the cigarette travels in the direction of the wind.

I use the same gauge I use when playing golf. I pick some grass up and let fall to the ground, noting the the direction of it's float...:thinking

Well, I took the info from the chart someone directed me to and made up a pocket wind chart. I laminated mine and it stays in my field box. You can download a pdf version of it ready to print, cut, and laminate if you want. You can down load it here. (http://www.worldkarting.com/heli/pocketwindchart.pdf)
