I recently purchased the YS 50st and installed it in my new Vibe 50. This is my first YS engine, I have a O.S.50 hyper in my pantera which runs great. I just thought I would give the YS 50 a try. Unfortunately I have not had much luck with this engine, and I am very frustrated. I have run two tanks so far, and with both tanks the engine was very difficult to start. The engine ran o.k., but not great. After landing the engine would quit well below idle. On the third tank I tried to start the engine, but could not get it started. I have replaced the glow plug and know that it is working properly. The tank is getting good pressure and the carb. is getting fuel. I have tried everything I can think of to get this engine running, I'm lost at this point. I hope you guys can help.

Oh Goody, an engine question actually in the engines and mufflers section. :P (not aimed at you TEJAM!!!)

More information required.
Questions

What fuel (nitro content) and muffler?
Is it installed exactly as per the manual? (35mm fuel line before check valve)
Is the check valve installed correctly?
Is the check valve clean and operating properly?
Are you using a filter?
What are your needle settings?
Have you read the instructions? (important hints on starting are written there)
Have you completed the break-in procedures yet?

I had a faulty regulator on mine (factory confirmed) but it still started and idled perfectly. I only had a problem on transition but with the new regulator, it is sweet.

My starting technique....

First start of the weekend - main needle 1 turn open from normal
Crank over for 10~15 seconds at full throttle (no glow booster of course)
Return main needle to original setting
Set idle throttle and glow booster on
Crank to start.

Subsequent starts do not require the main needle to be touched.

I also found that it starts better from a power panel (1.5~2 volts) than it does from a glow booster (1.2 volts)

What fuel (nitro content) and muffler? 30% Morgan/ MP5
Is it installed exactly as per the manual? (35mm fuel line before check valve) Yes
Is the check valve installed correctly? Yes
Are you using a filter? T-Filter
What are your needle settings? High speed 1.5 turn / Low speed 1 turn out
Have you read the instructions? (important hints on starting are written there) yes
Have you completed the break-in procedures yet? Yes
Is the check valve clean and operating properly? I assume it is operating properly. I can tell that there is pressure inside the tank. If I take the line off going to the carb. fuel will squirt out. So I assume it is working properly. Also I have a T-filter between the check valve and the fuel tank, and a piece of tubing off of the filter with a fuel clamp. I am using an Enya #3 glow plug, and using the switchglo.

Just read up on the switchglo and it says it automatically cuts off after 10 seconds.

That's not an awful lot of time to get the engine cranked, started and running smooth before the glow will cut off by itself.

And there's always the chance of something not working well giving a weak glow.

I would vote for trying a conventional glow booster or power panel and see if that changes your starting problems.
