View Full Version : Flips again, This time not a good ending. (video)
Well I tried it again, and the flight was going pretty good, did my thing like always, but then it went bad, I just had to do one more backflip and it ended up in the dirt. I got a little too far out, and I couldn't see it very well and by the time I realized it was on it's side it was too late to save it. I didn't even have the brains to pull throttle hold, just plowed it into the ground at full tilt, sideways. Oh well, I was just saying how I did not care so much about crashing anymore, but I still don't enjoy it.
So, without further delay/ranting, here it is:
h3JxtScHqaI
Pretty much all the normal stuff is broken:
Obviously, Main blades
Main gear
Main shaft
Feathering spindle
Flybar
Blade grips
Mixing arms
Tail boom
Canopy
Landing gear
And probably some other stuff I have not noticed yet.
And then there is the one that really sucks,
Bent the hell out of the battery, I'm not going to chance messing with it, it is already being properly disposed of.
Oh well, it was really fun until the last second or two, it really sucks when you finally realize there is nothing you can do to save it, And then you just wait for the crunching sound of the impact.
Whatever, I will be back in the air this weekend, either with a rebuilt Blade 400, or with the Trex 600, but I think I will abstain from any more inversion this weekend.

Too bad about the crash. Did you at least get a picture of your battery so you can submit your application for Team Taco?

I took some pics, I'll have to see if there is a good one of the pack.

Hey man I share your pain
Looked it over again, and noticed a few more broken parts, including the frame, also the bolt that goes through the headblock at the top of the mainshaft was sheared off. Damn that was a hard hit.
Went on ReadyHeli and totaled it all up, including two new lipos, the damage comes to $236.76. That was my only lipo, I have some serious thinking to do. Do I wanna fix the B400, or just buy another kit and transfer all my electronics to it. All my electronics survided intact. Those HS-65mg's are some tough little s.o.b.'s
Well, I really hope you all have better flights/luck than me, don't worry I'll be back at it soon.
But right now I feel like:BSS

Ouch! Sorry about the crash dude. However you probably know you are trying to fly beyond your abilities, so crashing is inevitable. You aren't even comfortable with nose in yet so you should not even be considering flips at this point. Keep rocking dude you'll get there, just take it slower.

Yes, I know I was probably way beyond my abilities, but I am also bored of hovering and slow FF. and if you never fly beyond your known abilities you will never try anything new.
I can do all this stuff on the sim, I just can't get it to transfer to real life yet.

Hey dude nice job!
I'm just a little further along than you but I have the same outlook on it... Fly it hard and you will get better, crashes are a part of it! Not sure if you saw my carnage thread but my last crash was spectatular, you've got an easy rebuild there in comparison.
I have to say even though I push it hard and always try new stuff I still dont do any inverted maneuvers that low to the ground yet, you've got some nuts man!:YeaBaby::YeaBaby:
Keep it up!

As last time (didnt mention) but can hear a lot of wind too
but this time seems you were flippin a lot lower than before?? maybe you got a little cocky? Well it sucks just the same. Probably better just to get a new kit w/o electronics.
It's guys like you that are pushing/encouraging me to do more, thanks for sharing.

:bawl Dang, sorry to hear sd0. What I am glad to hear is how you are taking it. Gives me strength for the future. Yea, I think I would just buy a new heli less electornics. 125 sounds much better. If you are back up in your B4 this weekend, you are the man. I think it would take me a week just to be able to see her mangled wreckage again if it was me. My worst crash, I could not look at it that night. I think I finally looked her over the next day and then she was repaired the day following that. Then there may have been one more day before I was ready to fly again.

usually I crash in the evenings, like you I dont even look at it.....just put it up and come in with my tail between my legs and fix her the next day.
Thanks guys, yes it was windy, and I was stupidly doing the flips a lot lower. It was hard to see because it was overcast and the sun was almost down, so I couldn't go up as high as usual. I knew I should have not tried that last backflip, as soon as I started it I knew I was going to crash, I also forgot to start my timer, and I was already 4+ minutes in Idle Up, I should have just landed.
Oh well live and learn, I will be flying again this weekend. Remeber even if I don't get the B400 back up I still have the 600.
And yes, I was maybe a little Cocky.
Damn that was an expensive flight, it works out to about $60 a minute. LOL!

More like:

Crashing into tiny little pieces and being able to laugh about it... Priceless.

Not yet, and now I'm sure it will be quite a while until I try it. Gonna do a lot more slow FF, and get really good with nose in first,
I will probably also take my 400 flying down a notch for a while too.
But it was a lot of fun, and I am able to take it in stride. No use getting all upset, I knew this would be an expensive hobby with a steep learning curve when I started, and I accept that, and the consequences of my actions.
I am able to laugh about it today, and the guys at work loved the crash video.

I doubt that, once you've been there its hard not to do the same or even push the envelope just a little further :YeaBaby:

Well, they're not actually available yet, but eventually Horizon will be selling a Replacement Airframe (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=EFLH1401)for the B400.

^ Perhaps I am being cynical but that is going to be a useful bookmark for me!!
Hey Sd0, both videos are great, it is a shame about the ending (and I dread to think how I will feel after my first big crash) but you're positive attitude to it speaks volumes. As someone at the very bottom of this steep heli learning curve the cats who aren't discouraged by a crash are the ones that inspire me to give it a go and also keep me on th eground knowing what inevitably will happen now and then!
Good luck fixing her up and good job pushing it hard.

Happy to be of service, I just wanted to share this with everyone. Crashing is part of learning, nothing to get mad about. Although afterwards I do replay it in my head and think to myself I shoulda known better than to try that last flip. But that is all behind me now and all that matters is getting back on the horse.
Also, like LockMD said I will most likely go right back to flips and stuff, cause now I can never go back to just hovering.
Can't wait for Friday, that's when I'll get all my stuff and get to building. And then it will be time for some more crazyness.
