Hey guys! Like the title says I'm new to the RC world. I would love some tips and tricks to enjoy RC helicopters to the fullest extent. :)
I am currently applying for WOC school, so I'm very interested in helicopters haha. I want to fly an OH58D, AKA Kiowa Warriors. Was wondering what would be a great, NON-cheap, dependable beginner GAS/NITRO helicopter? It would be awesome if someone could direct me to parts/controllers and all accessories that would be handy. Like I said I am new to the RC world. Thanks!
Also familiar terms, such as what is a gyro?

Welcome. I missed out on Warrant Officer Flight Training by a hair.
Lets start with, whats your budget?
http://www.heliproz.com will get you drooling
As for the gyro, whenever you change the power on a helicopter the torque changes and that changes the amount of tail pitch you need to maintain heading. A gyro senses rotation about an axis and applies output to a servo, the combo keeps the tail under control and allows us to do the crazy aerobatics without having to constantly correct the rudder axis.

Sorry to hear that bro. Still have to take my AFAST so I'm just waiting to go up next wednesday. So my budget is around $800 total. I want to get at least a .3-.5 sized one. I really want something like the trex 600's I saw on youtube haha. Of course I will start slow, learning hovering, forward motion etc...

Sorry but unless you find a deal on a decent used one you aren't going to get into a Trex 600n with 800 dollars.
You need a kit 330 or so
Engine 185
Radio 225 ish for a DX 7 no servos
Pipe 35 to 70
Servos, 3x 69 for decent ones plus another 35 or so for a throttle servo
Blades 50 to 75
Reciever battery 35 maybe
Nitro support equipment such as a fuel pump, electric starter, glow driver, fuel, and basic tools.

I wasn't saying that I wanted one. Just something like it haha. Size and versatility wise I guess? Think you could help me out.

so I have been looking around and I find the raptor 30v2 on heliproz.com to be a great first helicopter and it is only 450 $$$. What controller would some of you recommend??

DX7 you can use the 821 servos that come with it. If you get that get the OS37 engine

This is the one I am looking at.
By looking at that package, what else would I need to be ready to get that baby off the ground?
