View Full Version : Blade question on 'floating'

Bert Kammerer said in a post a while back that the test pilots were mostly running 690 blades because 710 blades make the heli have such a light disc load that it floats too much and doesnt feel as good as it could. I have a set of Radix 710 SB blades which are 710 but weight the same as their 690 blades. So, im guessing this would make the float even worse? I noticed that in the first video of Lukas Riva flying the 700, he had the Radix 710 SB's on and in all his videos following he then had 690s on. Any thoughts on this.. what blades will you guys be choosing?

From what I have seen and heard the 690s are going to be the ticket. I have a set of Rotortech 690mm aeroflat blades CN266966C and also 690mm 14/5 TST Vblades. I figured I will try those out and see what fly the best.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is a total "pilot preference" deal...
I think 690's are quicker, and, therefore better for hardcore 3D, whereas the 710's will actually "float" more so as not to be as aggressive. Newb's will probably prefer the 710's..? (that's me) ;)
I talked with Andy from Assurance.... He personally said he likes the 710 Stick Bangers, which are the same weight as the standard 690's, but are 710mm.
I think everyone will have to try different blades, whether it's brand "A" or brand "B", and will also have to try different diameters, then come up with their own personal preference. After all, that's the fun of this hobby isn't it...? :YeaBaby:

you are completely correct.. it is about pilot preference. Thats why some love tst blades but others hate them. I am trying to learn hard 3d so I would like a blade that would compliment that type of flying better than the next blade. Either way, I think I will find out now as I have a set of 690's, a set of 700s, and a set of 710 SB.

I've flow my Vibe 90 with Radix 710 and it was'n enough "pop" for me and they felt heavy.
I switched to the 710SB and it's was much better, but I plan to run 690 on the 700 after I saw a few helis fly with these, if you are looking for hard 3D, it's 690.

the blade length affects disk loading. on the same helicopter, the longer the blades are, the lighter the disk loading is. hence, "float", or "more lift".
the blade weights, on the other hand, affects the gyroscopic effect. the heavier the blades are, the stronger the gyroscopic effect is. hence, more stable. so to the opposite of that, the light blades will make a heli more nimble, or touchy to some.
you generally want to try them out to see the difference and decide yourself.
I thought they taught these at RU. I heard that one needs to know this to be a Pharm D.

well buddy.. i had figured the 690's would give a faster cyclic since its less disc space. I have a set of 690's to try so i'll give them all a shot. Now.. Align has to just get this heli out because the longer its not out, the more optional equipment and fancy electronics and better this and that I keep buying so I have something to look at as I wait for the main course.

Magicmalik19, like some here said, it is all a matter of pilot's preference. Alan and I prefer 690's, but Jason is now flying 710's. Pilots who fly bigger and use more of the sky will probably prefer 710's whereas pilots who fly more in the box will probably prefer 690's. The heli can handle both and performs extremely well with any blade size from 690 to 710.
Hope this helps.

Glad to help Magicmalik19. In fact, 710's will allow the heli to track better and will be faster of course. You might not be able to run the same total pitch range unless you have exceptional pitch management skills, but should be quite fun if you like to fly big :)

maverick makes some 700mm blades that might be a good mix.
